Hello, my name’s Ed and I own a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD, w/o the Manual Mode and Earlier this week, I put my truck in Drive and noticed it wasn’t going over 20(ish) MPH, and as I gave it more gas it didn’t seem to accelerate just made exhaust sounds. I then shut off the truck and gave it about 30 seconds before restarting it, and drove just fine till I had use Reverse. I checked the transmission fluid and noticed it was a bit low, but even after I topped it off I realized it hasn’t fixed the problem. Truck has 179K miles. Any ideas on what may be happening? Thank you.

Was the trans ever serviced?

What color is the trans fluid.

Might be time to replace it.

Sounds like a 4L60 in your truck.

What gears does it work in?  Have you tried manually shifting starting with 1, then shift to 2 then 3?  Do you have reverse?

might be a shift solenoid ...you'll have to get someone to plug it in and test it

Had it towed into the shop today, thank you for your response.

After I added Transmission fluid it seemed to function a little better, I had it towed to the shop today. Didn’t have a chance to manually shift it, and reverse would work only after shutting the truck and waiting about 30 seconds.

So, what is it about transmissions?  Owners are obsessed with motor oil changes every 3,000 miles but when it comes to the transmission it's OK to ignore it till something goes wrong, then blame the manufacturer.   Change your transmission fluid early and often if towing or hauling heavy loads. Mass production and cost cutting lead to 'good enough' but not necessarily the best available.  Look at OEM tires for example, decent "good enough" quality but not the best.  Same with automatic transmission fluid and all other lubes and parts used in production, good enough for GM.

Blaming the driver when the manual says different isn’t helping. As far back I can remember 2004 the manual said 150K fluid change for the transmission. As a user of Amsoil since the 80s that wouldn’t seem unreasonable. My recent Avalanche purchase had 168K when the transmission had it’s first change. I only had one dealer ever recommend anything but normal service. Earlier service would seem extreme and not necessary. In normal driving.

I will add. Amazing to me after reading the extensive maintenance record keeping on this Avalanche. The original owner did 3K oil changes. But change the filter every other oil change. Every thing else was by the manual.

Transmission fluid and brake fluid are the most neglected fluids on a vehicle IMO. Next would be coolant fluid.

Changing all fluids more than the recommended intervals is worth it to me. I got into the habit of doing this when fluids were dino oil, like 3 k mile OCI's.  With todays better fluids it may not be required as much as years ago. Cheap insurance to me and has worked for me.

Days of nearly every boy on the block able to swap a motor or rebuild a diff are dUn. Stick that with a fork. Manufactures have gone out of their way to see to it people stay ignorant, helpless and dependent. Out right lies sometimes. Like forever fluids. Removing ability to check or service.....   It does not surprise me things like this happen. It is the way we are trained to be. Like seals with beachballs. Even most servicing dealers are afraid to open a transmission.

Nothing wrong with that, cheap insurance for do it yourselfers. We must remember people do look up on the net longevity when buying these expensive vehicles. I do. When I bought my wife’s Genesis 11 years ago it wasn’t rated as well as others for longevity. It was about 20K cheaper than its nearest competition. And had it the best warranty. It’s been our best car ever. Honda, Toyota, and VW have one of the longest oil change intervals. They also have the best longevity results. It can be confusing to the average buyer. I personally never had an oil related failure going extended. Buying a new truck every two years in my working life for 40 years. Most of my trucks carried my equipment or hauled equipment for the first 30 years. Traveling 50-60K miles a year. Lead foot, modified, loud pipes were the norm. Half the time on oil pipelines. Most of the time never shut off. You’d be be hard pressed to find a group of people who worked them harder. As my family business. We bought vehicles that could handle us. Not tailored ourselves to unrealistic maintenance requirements. Didn’t have the time. I lost one engine a V-10 to a leaky injection seal lean out, blown piston. Replace under warranty.
