Truck

2020 AT4 CarbonPro (shortbed) with a 6.2 and dealer installed GM catback/cold air intake w/calibration riding on 20s with trail runners.  Tire pressure increased to 38 for lower rolling resistance.

 

Started the trip with 3500 miles on the clock and took a 1582 mile mostly interstate trip and here are my MPGs

Just a perfect ride over most surfaces.  A combination of poor concrete slab alignment and potholes seemed to get the truck moderately unsettled at 75 mph but never to the point of the nannies kicking in or me reaching for the brake pedal.  

 

As expected the MPG matched EPA at 75 mph.  One tank mostly at 82 netted 18mpg.  Actual 25 mile average at that speed was 17.5. 

 

Adaptive cruise is really good and it definitely reinforces good habits as it will try to decrease speed well in advance of where I normally initiate a pass.

 

Power is instantaneous  at any speed up to the limiter.

 

Was kind of worried as I had the valve spring issue at 197 miles....but it functioned well this trip.

He could have said "Goodyear Trail Runners" instead of lower case "trail runners",  to me implying mud tires or something along those lines.  I have the exact same tires on my AT4 CP 6.2 and tires make the biggest difference in mileage, so I was keenly interested in exactly what "trail runners" meant.  I had no clue they were called "Trailer Runners" nor do I give a damn, only knew they were Goodyear Wranglers.

On a round trip ATL-->NOLA-->ATL in my 2018 w/ 6.2L w/ 4wd loaded with 4 people and luggage (three girls, so LOTS of luggage, LOL!) I averaged 25.5mpg for the entire round trip.  Speed was around 75mph, tires are the stock 22" Bridgestone Duellers at 35psi. 

 

Granted that's a fairly "flat" drive most of the way, but I was stunned that you could get that kind of mileage out of a 420HP 6.2L 4x4!

Guy out here in OKC with me has a 2019 AT4 6.2 with 18" dura tracs and makes the same claims....gotta call BS on him unless he's drafting.  For you...that might not be unreasonable.  Doesn't look like you're lifted and likely running all seasons.  Thanks for sharing.

2020 Trail Boss LT 6.2 w/ GM CAI and Performance Exhaust, and stock 18" Duratracs. Started in Norfolk, VA and ended in San Diego, CA. To I-64 to I-85; to I-40 across NC and TN, into AR; then dropped south to Natchitoches, LA; then back roads to interstate to San Antonio, TX; more back roads to Roswell, NM and then north to I-40; to Flagstaff, AZ and Grand Canyon south rim; north to Grand Canyon north rim; to Mesquite, NV via bank roads to St George, UT and I-15 south; finally down I-15/I-215 to San Diego, CA, and was north of 20 mpg all the time. I was point, and my wife followed in her 2017 Traverse. We need fuel stops at the same time every time. My cruise control was set between 4+ to 8+ over the posted speed limit. Best 50 mile mpg was 23.9 and 25 more mpg is 33.X. don't remember to 400 mile mpg, but it is north of 20. No drafting going on. These trucks with the 6.2 are returning better mpg than estimated by the EPA.

I checked my 25/50/400 this morning and it was 24.9/23.1/20.1 respectively.  They do well just shocked at some of the claimed numbers

My experience with trucks, cars, SUVs and traveling is a little less air pressure for a smoother ride. With trucks instead of setting the cruise at 74. I usually ran 72. That usually made up for the less air pressure. My last truck I used as a trip vehicle was a 2014 GMC. 5.3-342 gear V-4 delete. I routinely had over 20 MPGs, usually around 22. A detour off 95 north near Columbia on to 17 @ 60MPH got me 24MPG. The softer (less air) made for a smooth ride. I follow the same (less air) in my other rides too.

    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps. 
    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O. 
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
