No question that the a gasoline engine is less expensive to buy and also less expensive to run, however, I wouldn't give up my Duramax for the the difference.  Diesel fuel is $0.20/gal cheaper where I'm at and generally stays that way.  The power of the diesel and the 10 speed trans are a great combination if you can afford it.  I don't really drive it enough for the extra fuel efficiency of the diesel to make a lot of difference but there isn't a gasoline engine in a heavy duty pickup that can approach it for fuel mileage.

I also noticed that no one mentioned resale value. You will definitely make up a nice chunk of the $10k diesel premium when selling/trading in down the road. Resale value and fuel economy together can certainly reduce the cost gap. Unfortunately, the emissions crap have made diesels less reliable and expensive to repair. The Ford 7.3 gas seems like it might be a good way to go since it's port injected and runs on regular unleaded. I'm shopping for an HD currently. I've always wanted a diesel but I'm still not sure.

Have to remember a lot of the stuff you hear online is all the bad.  For every horror story there are 10 trucks out there probably more where there is no issue.  With that said I think you have to look at how long you will own it.  I live in the North with salt, some people keep things forever but typically a realistic life span of a vehicle up here  is 10 years max.  For me its roughly 4-5 years max,  with that mind I get a bumper to bumper for 3 years and have another 2 years after that for power train.  I have owned some diesels past warranty have purchased the manufactured branded warranty for like 1500 bucks.  With all of those things my risk is very minimal in paying big for repairs. 

 

Like I said upon resale you will get a portion of that 10k and with improved gas mileage on the diesel, your overall cost of ownership over 5-10 years is probably very similar.  Unless your the guy that gets a new truck every 1-2 years, those guys are nuts and only see things in the terms of what their payment is.

I have heard a couple of folks mention that you recover some front end cost at resale. That is not the case according to Edmunds or Kbb. In fact the gas depreciates slightly less than diesel variants. Possibly due to relatively fewer available and the percieve potential of major repair expense of diesel due to inability of major manufacturers to sort emmission controls out dependably to date.

I think you may be confusing depreciation percentage with depreciation actual dollars.   Let's say you buy a diesel for 80k and sell it 5 years later for 60 k, versus you buy a gas truck for 70k and sell it after 5 years for 56k.  While your simple capital cost of ownership was 20k for the diesel and 14k for the gas, the diesel owner did still get 4k more for their used truck.  They don't fully lose that extra 10k they paid at initial purchase.  That 4k additional money back at resale is what people are talking about when they say you recoup some or most of the cost of purchasing a diesel at resale.  However, as you point out, the gas truck actually held its value better in that hypothetical example, and that is what the KBB data you mentioned apparently shows.

Yeah when I compared like trucks the diesels were commanding 4-6k more.  Because of the market Ive actually seen diesels go for 10k more than a gas lately.

All in the eyes of the owner.  Bigger gun,  faster car, etc.  Cheaper or more expensive dont always provide context.   My house cost twice as much as my neighbors and twice as big, he still has a house and lives just fine, but its not a better house

Topic was gas v. diesel cost of ownership. If the gas truck will perform the needs of poster it will be cheaper to own. If someone wants a bigger, house, bigger rv, boat, et.al. its the great american way. At least it used to be! But it is a want not a need and based on the posters question he is looking to fill a need.

I get that.  You asked worth, and thats subjective.  The gas motor is cheaper to buy and most likely cheaper to run at least in the short term. You asked what the 10k would really be worth, and many have answered.  I think the OPs question is answered one engine is better than the other,  one engine is probably cheaper.  What does the owner want?  Cheaper isnt always better,  nor is spending more money

More to the cost discussion than what a calculator shows. It comes down to how you define "cost or price".  Strictly dollars wise I think the gas owners can make an argument.  But for me the true cost/value of the diesel is the far more satisfying experience every time I drive it either empty or loader.  If I have to crunch numbers because that difference is so tight, the diesel is an absolute no brainer.  I always hear about the emmissions horror stories too that are way over blown and very isolated plus the Duramax combo has 40k more of drivetrain warranty than the gas.  The gas trucks get the job done but when asking about gas vs diesel cost of ownership there is much more to it than just the $$$, its the overall experience.  Also don't over look the 10spd tranny, its absolutely awesome if you haven't experienced it..

 

Point being for the original question posted or anyone else asking the same question, There are intangibles beyond the numbers that should factor in.

depends on miles, driving habbits, towing and maintenance.  I can say from me, I usually do my own maintenance and I use the truck for towing/work . I wanted diesel, but the math # and seeing as I use the truck as a truck, diesel would have been cheaper based on mpg and driving if I kept it for 14 years... i still paid over 50k  for a gasser and it didnt even come with a volume control on the wheel. i have serious doubts it will still be running after 5-6 years so my math and reasons are out the window. ill update when I sell it

Volume on the steering wheel is a package not a motor choice,  but I get you.  I think if you were to legit put 14 years on a vehicle and tow a lot there would only be on choice and that would be the diesel. 

 

For me I dont think I would own anything past 5 years,  but think in general most trucks should give somebody between 5-10 years of good service before it becomes non economical to own.  Like I said before with a diesel if your going for cost savings you will probably have to drive it close to decade maybe more to say you saved money. 

 

Ive owned both, and there value in a diesel hauling up hill both ways while eating your lunch, talking on the phone and breaking a sweat vs something that just completes the requirement.

4.  Diesel fuel cost on average 20 cents more a gallon, some places more some less,  around here its closer to 30 cents more.  Although you will likely get 20-30% better MPG with diesel maybe more.  Ive done calculations here at 15k miles a year  between the gas engine and diesel, and with the better MPG of diesel your literally at like 10-15  years maybe more on breaking even with point number 3, with an average 15k miles a year.   Could speed up that break even point if you live somewhere where diesel is the same or cheaper or haul a ton of miles, but the bottom line is you will probably never see that break even point

 

The only diesel I could a break even point to make sense was the dodge eco diesel in the half ton,  engine was only a 3-4k upgrade and the mileage bump made it so the break even point was like 4 years.  But with that said that motor was less capable than many gas engines on the market, so really didnt make sense unless you were crusing long miles in the truck.

 

4a. Diesel cost more up front, but you will hold value better at trade or selling time, so you will get some of that back.  4-5 year old diesels still command 40k plus and you simply wouldnt see that in gas truck.

 

5.  Break fix maintenance will be more as well.  Personally I would never own a diesel without some sort of warranty on the power train.

 

With this all being said I am currently in a gas truck and just ordered a diesel 2500, and have owned diesels in the past.  Nothing pulls like a diesel it just doesn't.  And dont forget throwing a big load on a gas engine and getting 10mpg or sometimes less, sucks having to shell out at that pump at an already expensive trip.   Theres hauling with gas and RPM, slowing down etc,  where the diesel will just keep going. 

 

 

I always find the resale value point humorous.  People will mention that an old diesel will go for 20K while a gas from the same year with similar miles and condition will only go for 10K.  Well yeah you paid 10K more for the diesel so that makes sense.  It’s worth more but that doesn’t mean it held its value any better.

If an older diesel sells for $10K more than a gasoline version, then it did indeed keep more value than the gas engine truck.  $10K would be a 100% return on the investment and that's unheard of with used vehicles.  The argument that diesels don't hold their value any more than a gas engine may be legitimate but the analogy above is wrong.

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
