Hi, not sure if this is a good place to go or post this. We have a 94 gmc w4 (2500?). This thing has been a royal pita since we bought it. Engine has had issues, transmission had to be rebuilt you name it. Now that namely is because of the previous owners. 
This however presents an issue for me as I have to fix the thing. I cannot find parts or info on these trucks to save my life. We have a 96 also thats techically an isuzu. Same thing. 
Its like GMC (and isuzu technically) want to pretend these things never existed. Dealers pretty much tell us they cant help us and they have no idea what the things are or what parts they need. 

I have the vin: 4KDB4B1A9RJ001182 
Ive checked numerous places but every one tells me this vin is incorrect and doesnt exist. Same thing on our isuzu model. 
9th vin number doesnt check out with the algorithm. Ive checked many times and thats indeed what the number is.

Im trying to get as much info about them as I can as this thing is insanely sluggish and runs poorly after a new alternator, plugs, wires, you name it. I was thinking maybe the timing could be adjusted? maybe the timing chain is going bad too, not sure its got over 179k miles. 
I believe its a stock gm 350. Its paired with a 4L80-E transmission. 

Any advice would be so helpful. Thanks.

If the fuel pressure is good and the pump is putting out good volume and the injectors are both spraying a good pattern (use a timing light to see them better), then I'd focus on the distributor - cap, rotor, wires, timing, ignitor unit, pickup, etc.. Also make sure the distributor isn't completely worn out, since it sounds like it was neglected by the prior owners - check the shaft with rotor removed for excessive play.

 

Always start with the simple stuff first before diving into the engine. Those 350's will run 400k-plus miles with good care. Sounds like the previous owners didn't like maintenance, so timing chain issues are possible there, too.

Awesome. I will write those things down and look into them.
The tank is on the right side (under the dump bed) And it has a single wire on top that doesnt appear to go to anything. The fuel gauge also doesnt work so we are thinking the pump will need to be replaced. (Hence trying to find the info on what to buy to replace it with). 
Odd thing is its mostly super sluggish on startup but runs generally fine after its warm. 


An insight on the genius we bought it from.. All of a sudden it wouldnt shift out of 2nd gear. Found out the transmission was almost out of fluid and put itself in limp mode. Ended up needing to rebuild it because of this. 
It ran out of fluid because the guy for whatever reason removed the plug from the trans pan and tried to weld it shut. He wasnt successful and it leaked like a sieve.

Yikes.

 

Those transmissions won't go into "limp mode" since they're not computer controlled. They either work or they don't. There's an electrical connection for the lockup converter, and usually a mechanical cable connection to the throttle body called a "TV cable" - SUPER important. If this cable is adjusted incorrectly, you can burn a transmission up in less than 50 feet. That controls line pressure, shift points, kick down, etc. - basically everything. Running it low on fluid will also burn them up fairly quickly.

 

That single wire is probably for the fuel gauge. Don't replace the pump unless it's down on pressure and volume. No need to replace a pump just for the gauge. Parts today are garbage, so you're better off with whatever is in there. Fuel pressure should increase slightly on a snap throttle. If it decreases, it's days are numbered, IF the regulator is working correctly. It should increase pressure when the vacuum line is pulled off the regulator (if it's set up that way - my memory is fuzzy on that). Do that test first.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
