I’m looking for a reasonable alternative to the tailgate camera. I have a camper on my 3500 most of the time, hence no camera. I have a 360 type of display and want to have that active. It goes totally out without the factory camera. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The GM trailer integrates pretty good and gives you the ability to see behind and the side views, depending on the length of your camper you may be able to get the invisible trailer deal to work. If nothing else it gives you the ability to leave that view up on your screen without timing out.

Buy the OEM camera, get a cable from Pasternack.com, figure out how you want to mount it. Here is my installation on my camper:

If'n you're talking about having your tailgate off, there is a GM upfitter response about a "kit" to keep the 360 display working, but not the tailgate camera view.

Something along the lines of a wiring harness and a camera zipped tied up under the bumper. Camera lense is spray painted black and taped over.

I can do some searching if'n you don't come across the bulletin.

Here you go. Wasn't difficult to find when I had it downloaded on my phone already.

If'n this issue isn't what you're describing, I'm sorry for the wasted bandwidth...

Thanks. I guess this is one way to fix it, but seems kind of silly to buy the substitute camera and black it out. Camerasource.com offers a replacement camera for $389 but that’s kind of high. I was hoping for something a little less expensive.

I agree. I would attempt to mount the replacement camera under the camper shell, even if it was duct taped! Might not be calibrated exactly, but I'm sure it would work in reverse just fine for the picture screen, just not the guide lines or hitch view.

My OEM camera, which is the same part number as my tailgate camera, was about $100 from one of the on line gm parts dealers. The cable from Pasternack was $36 shipped. The hard part was fabricating an enclosure. All the ones i found on line were huge. I used a pvc plumbing fitting. The tailgate camera angle is very close to 45 degrees down, so a 45 degree ell worked well.

Very clean install.  Looks way more expensive than what you paid.
