I just bought a 2014 silverado 1500 at 96k and i believe they recommend a transmission fluid replacement at 100k just wondering what exactly should be done and how hard it is to do? The truck ive noticed shifts a little rough when its driven from cold off flat ground but when parked in my driveway which is a good incline it shifts nice and smooth from a cold start so thinking if anything maybe the fluid is low.

The job is as hard you make it for the most part.

Watch youtube video's on it, it's been covered many times on there. Getting the transmission pan down to swap the filter is the only "hard" part. Several ways you can do it so the pan clears the exhaust. It can be messy if you don't suck all the fluid out the dipstick tube first but that's just the way it goes.

I'll second CamGTP statements.

Since I've changed my filter and fluid, I pull 1 gallon of fluid back out the dipstick and refill with one gallon of fresh fluid every 15k miles. It's easy and gives me peace of mind. I don't know if it is buying my any extra life but I am currently at 118k miles on mine.

I meant more as in replacing the filter inside and what not

Mechanically it's more obnoxious than difficult. GM goes out of its way to make thinks hard for the DYI crowd. No drain plug and hanging the exhaust below the pan makes a lift NICE but not required if your creative. They, GM, have turned what should be a 30 minute service into a several hour ordeal at home. Just like they like it.

The filter itself is a bull and horse catcher. 100 micron.  Changing it I don't see doing much. That said then; sucking the fluid via the dipstick and replacing EXACTLY the amount drawn is a great option. Do a gallon every oil change for a half dozen OCI's and all will be good.

At 50 K I had my shop do the drop and fill on a lift but instead of reinstalling the OEM pan I had them install the PML pan with a drain and filter at the same time. Install a Valvomax quick change drain and make it driveway 'A caveman can do it" simple. Better money spent would be to have a shop slice in a remote filter into pump discharge line. (top off the TBV), that will actually filter something.

That fluid was dead 50K miles ago.  Next time, change it before 45K miles are on the fluid.  Since you just got it, ask the guys about "flipping the pill" or putting in a lower temp transmission thermostat.

Agree swathdiver,

I'm a fluid junkie as you all know. I bought used vehicles with 50 K or less so I could change fluids before they died. Why I never had any trans problems for years IMO.
