The real question here is what do you plan on doing with it.  The 6.6 gas is a gas hog your looking at 10-12mpg depending on the situation.  I know you said no diesel and right now probably makes sense but if diesel were to drop and you factor in the savings on fuel mileage it might be a thought.

 

 

 

It would take a long time to recoup the extra cost of the diesel based on fuel costs.

Yeah right now be a lost cause,  when diesel was the same or less its about 5-6 years given standard mileage of 15k a year or so.  

 

Whats lost though on some, is you dont have to worry about getting the whole ten grand back as that truck with a diesel will always command more at resale or trade.  Reality you probably at least get 5k more back and if newer probably more.  So really its not that much of a stretch when the diesel motor is getting 25-30% better fuel mileage.

Return on investment is a good point. 

My favorite thing about the diesel is just how laid back and relaxed the drive is.  It's like the "easy button."  Need fuel while pulling a big arsed trailer, go to the truck side.  Need to pass someone, push down on the accelerator.  Got a big downhill, turn on the exhaust brake.  

My favorite thing about the gas engine is being able to do short trips without worry.  Second favorite is the low maintenance & repair costs.  Put a whole long block in the truck for the cost of a set of diesel injectors.

Very true.  Just changed the oil in my diesel and cost me 80 bucks to do it myself.  better than the 200 the dealer wanted.  Get away from highways and in cities actually finding diesel can be fun, but your right truck stops that tank is filled up in 3mins

 

I just like the diesel because you can go up hill with a load going 80, eating a cheeseburger and talking on the phone without thinking much about it,  instead of the gas engine screaming at 6k and constantly hunting for gears.  

 

Pros and cons for each.  I just go by the rule if if i need a big truck its going to be diesel, If not im going to get a half ton and instead of the big gasser.

As expected, the rear axle GAWR is higher on the 3500.  Less chance of overloading the rear axle when towing.  Depending on the size of the trailer, and how much you might load in the bed of the truck while camping, you may overload a 2500 faster than you think.

I'm a newbie here.. 

Great forum you all have going! I have a 2500 6.6 Gas on order, due for July. I occasionally drive work trucks, both gas and diesel, 3/4 and 1 ton. Everyone I know says get the 3500 to have the payload, but picked the 2500 over the 3500 for the ride. Inevitably, my wife and I will have to take long road trip with it empty and the 3500 would be simply too springy for her. 

 

The design philosphy for the L8T and the 6 speed. I must be exactly the type of person this combo was designed for. 

A proven 6 speed that have been methodically steadily improved for a long time. And a motor that based on a bullet-proof platform with an eye towards, approaching diesel performance ( at least I appreciate the effort ). This kind of stuff is awesome.

 

Plan to tow 8-10K probably every other month with some moderate construction work on a regular basis. 

 

Have test driven everything, had an interesting experience with a 60K mi used 2020 3500 Diesel. The truck looked great, but man the transmission was tore up. Clunky on multiple gears. Had alot of miles on it, probably driven hard, but.... scared me. That solidified my decision on the gas.

There is a thread somewhere on this forum where a guy bought almost the same truck as mine, but as a 2500.  His payload was about 900lbs less, but his pin weight (gooseneck/5th wheel) was a bit higher.  That was a real surprise to me.  We both put pictures of our data tags on the thread.  Wish I could find that thread.  It really shows how careful choices can maximize the abilities of the 2500.  In his case a salesman at the dealership spec'd the build, and really new what he was doing.

Sounds to me like you made an excellent choice for your towing needs and your ride comfort. Your payload is still going to be in the 3000 lbs ballpark in a 2500. This coming from a 2021 3500 owner.

I just purchased a 2022 2500 2wd crew cab LT (gas) a few weeks ago. My payload is 3607 lbs. Would a 3500 really be much more than that?

If I remember right it goes to about 4,600lbs in a crew cab. But how many Mother-in-laws do you really want in your back seat?

The reason for the difference is the diesel.  These towing tags are all set up for 10% tongue weight and 15% pin weight of the max towing.  So, since the diesel tows more, the tongue and pin weight are higher.

 

I still find the tongue weights really low and would like to better understand how they arrive at them, but look at any GM tag, and they are all exactly 10 and 15%.

Agree with your assessment on tongue weights.  Great point! :thumbs:

My biggest concern would be in case of an accident with fatality, where the investigation goes through every little detail.  The load could be within DOT standards, but over the GM tongue rating.  That opens up a whole can of worms in civil litigation. 

Thankfully with the 5th wheel I'm in good shape.  But if I was pulling a goose neck live stock trailer, that has the potential to be an issue.  Which in my case would require "more" truck than I need on a daily basis. 

I'm currently looking at this scenario and may just sub out the hauling, which is a whole other can of worms. lol

I am a good use case for the gasser as well.  I drive tops about 6k per year mostly short trips as everything is close by. I bought at the end of February and only have 1250 miles on it. My current camper is only 5k loaded out and we are in flat Michigan. 2500 has plenty of payload for me. Ran out in my half ton with bikes/ roll top cover, paddleboards, and corn hole in the bed.

maybe 1000lbs depending on config.  Reality is this unless your hauling big time weight and im talking 12k or more on an al the time basis your never going to realize the potential of a 3500.  To me if you need it go dually otherwise save the ride and a little gas and go 2500.

Thanks for the awesome insight, I drive well under 10k a year, im figuring a toy hauler would be pushing 10k easily with 2 bikes. We're planning to rent a couple to see if we can justify a purchase of an rv, im definitely leaning 5th wheel. Probably 3 trips a year, mostly around 1-2k miles per trip. 2500/3500srw I think I'll see what lands close by, doesn't seem to be much to pick from. But I don't think I can justify the diesel.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
