I'm looking at a 2022 1500 that's allegedly "built and on the way".

It's equipped with: "L84-Engine: 5.3L, EcoTec3 V-8, DI, Dynamic Fuel Mgt, V V T"

The build sheet shows Option Code "YK9-CREDIT - NOT EQUIPPED WITH DYNAMIC FUEL MANAGEMENT"

Is this deletion a chip shortage issue, or is Chevy deleting the Dynamic Fuel Management due to engine/lifter issues?

Thanks

I recall its due to the chip shortage. And it's one of those where it's welcomed to be not equipped with 🤣

Correct.  YK9 is not equipped with DOD.  Hardware is still in the engine, ECM is missing the ability to run it.  It is not an item that will be retrofitted either so its always off.

With the hardware still present in the engine, what is the reasoning behind the YK9 modification? Is it being done to reduce the chances of engine issues believed to be tied to DFM?

Its possible, but GM's line was for semiconductor allocation.  Delete DFM to re-allocate those for other vehicles.

According to GM:

Internal components related to AFM or DFM function will be present in engines; wiring, connectors, and fuses will be present in vehicles with RPO YK9. The ECM will not be capable of activating the cylinder deactivation technology.

When diagnosing and repairing concerns with base engine or electrical function which may be related to AFM or DFM related hardware; utilize appropriate diagnostics within SI and replace any needed components as directed by the Electronic Parts Catalog; no changes will occur to AFM or DFM related components.

Important: Any truck designated with RPO YK9 CANNOT be reprogrammed and changed to “Turn on” the AFM/DFM functionality.

It can still grenade like all the rest of them.

IMHO, I find it hard to believe that Chevy would turn off an engine's DFM to reallocate its chip. Especially because no DFM equals less MPG, and GM is very concerned with CAFE Standards.

On the other hand, the cam, lifters, and other DFM (DOD) specific parts are still present in the engine. If there is a reliability issue with these parts, will disabling DFM lessen failures?

Just bought a new Silverado last week. How do I know if it has DFM? Sticker did not mention any credit for DFM, so safe to assume it has it?

Here is a snip from a sticker with the YK9 option on Build Sheet:

Thanks. Looks like my truck does have DFM enabled.
