Boost Auto Tow Mirrors?

Anyone care to comment on the actual towing functionality of the Boost Auto Tow Mirrors? I just bought them for my 2021 Trail Boss. I didn't realize that they didn't extend/retract until I opened the box today. I tow a 30' camper and previously used the extendable type tow mirrors on my 2014 Silverado. Thinking about sending them back and purchasing the extendable mirrors from GM. I welcome any opinions from current owners of these mirrors. My truck has been in the shop for a couple weeks and not exactly sure when I'll get it back, so I can't test them out at the moment. Thanks!

The newer tow mirrors are about as wide as the old style tow mirrors were, at full extension. I have them on my 2022 LTD and they are great, even when not towing. If you decide to keep them, hopefully my install video will help you out. See below.

Be aware that when running with them in the pulled in position, the new style GM tow mirrors, along with the revised 'A' pillar, together create a much bigger blind spot (especially on passenger side) than the previous generation mirrors.

 

I have been a user and fan of tow mirrors for many years. 

 

Ran '10, '11, '16, '18 and '21 with tow mirrors.

Ran a '15 with regular mirrors.  Lack of tow mirrors was one reason I switched to the '16.

 

Current '23 has standard mirrors, in part because I'm driving more often in mare situations where the blind spot is a nuisance. 

 

I 'feel' (long time since I drove the '15 or similar) that the rear visibility is better with the newer type of standard mirrors. 

Haven't towed one of the enclosed trailers with this truck yet.   I don't tow a travel trailer.

 

I don't tow much anymore.

I'm thinking I'll try the clip-on style if I decide the standard mirrors aren't doing the job.

Thanks for the input guys. I got my truck back and installed them. I haven't towed the camper yet, but these Boost Auto mirrors seems to be about an inch shorter than my dad's 3500's mirrors when they're fully extended. They'll likely do just fine. I liked the idea of keeping the BSM and front spotlights, something the GM tow mirrors are lacking on the 1500's. Unfortunately, they misinformed me about the front spotlights working as plug-n-play. My stock (non-towing) mirrors had the front spotlights, but they don't work on the Boost Auto mirrors. They offered to refund the $40 for their error. I think I can live without that feature. I may eventually order the harness to get all the lights working anyway.

I will say, I have never heard of this company before and went to check them out. They have a pretty awesome looking running board that I am debating on getting now so thank you OP for posting.

They seem to have some nice products. This is my first purchase from them. Their support is top notch, they answer any questions within hours (email).

Awesome.... so the wiring for the signals is already there, just not being used?

I wanted to start installing the Boost Auto towing mirrors but when I opened the box there was only the mirrors, no wiring harness', or parts, nothing but the mirrors. So, I called them, and they wanted pictures of whatever was in the box and the empty box itself. Then they realized that they forgot to include the wiring harness, the wireless control modules and whatever else I had ordered. So, now I'm waiting for those parts to arrive, and I checked the USPS tracking and they have not shipped yet! Damn it, I thought I'd have the mirrors installed by now. I think I'm going to start taking my truck apart, so I can be ready when the parts do arrive. All I can do now is install the mirrors and that is it until the other parts arrive.

But I must say, their customer service was on the ball and agreed that they made a mistake right from the get-go. I just wish they would have overnighted the parts. But I guess, it is what it is.

Their customer service is really great. I had to have one of my mirrors replaced and they made the process pretty painless.

 

As stated above, these mirrors do create one hell of a blind spot compared to the previous generations. I literally have to look up and over or around the mirrors in many intersections as it's a big enough blind spot to block an entire vehicle. However, they do a good job while towing my 30' camper. I just wish these extended and retracted, I didn't realize that they didn't until I opened the box.

 

Good luck on your installation. I didn't purchase any of the extra wiring, so most of the added functionality (lights) don't work. I may add that in the future though.

I'm in the progress of installing the Boost Power towing mirrors. I'd be lying if I said this install was easy. In fact, it's a lot of work but I move very slowly and take a lot of breaks and even a couple of naps. 😔 All I have left to do is put the truck back together and see if everything works. Actually, I'll be very surprised if they do work. The wiring was especially difficult for me because my eyes aren't what they used to be and I'm working with one hand. My right hand was in a cast and now in a brace and it's very painful to even use it. I'm right-handed and can't do s***t with my left so I had to stop frequently to ice my hand. I'm just too damn old to do this type of work and because this install is so involved it would have cost a small fortune to have someone do it.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, I'm at a complete standstill. I was hoping to finish by this weekend but unfortunately, tomorrow I'm having heart surgery and have no idea when I'll get back at it, but I'll let you know when I do.

Good luck with the truck and I hope the heart surgery went well. If you haven't already, you should give Boost Auto a call to help you through th install. They have pretty good support. Take care!

      I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.

      Thanks to the convenience of Amazon, I was able to get a few things done to the truck today.  I installed Carquest Premium oil and air filters with five quarts of Mobil1 High Mileage 10-30 along with a quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 I already had.  The latch for the flip up center console lid was broken so I replaced it along with the power mirror switch.  I found my push retainer assortment this morning and reattached the plastic under the bumper and it was only held on with a few screws and retainers.  Then I programmed a new remote keyless entry fob so I can lock my dog in the truck when I take her out with me (I've got to keep the air going for her since it's been in the 100s).  Finally, I ordered some LED interior bulbs and replaced the reading lamps.  The front lights are working fine while one of the back lights only works intermittently and the other not at all.   While under the truck, I found the source of at least one of the noises: the sway bar links need replacing.  I ordered a set of Suspension Dudes links with Code Red bushings.  Never heard of them, but they're made in the USA and have decent reviews.  While making yet another Amazon order, I went ahead and added a set of front tow hooks.  I went with red, since that's the color of the sway bar link and bushings and it should look decent enough on a black and chrome truck.  Speaking of which, it doesn't bug me much, but the passenger side mirror has a chrome cap while the driver side doesn't, so eventually I'll make them match one way or another.  Oh, and I ordered a $20 TPMS reset tool.  No idea if it will do anything for my sensors but it was cheap and will work for the Ford Transit Connect as well.     For tradition's sake, I ordered a new oil change wrench.  I kept the Snap-On 9/16"x15mm GM wrench I bought when I was 18 in the 2006 GMC from the time I bought that truck until the truck was lost.  While I was tempted, there's no need to spend $80 for a new SO wrench, or even $50 with shipping for a used one on Ebay.  I just bought a Duratech 15mm extra-long ratcheting wrench to do the job as needed.  It works, and if I like that wrench enough, I'll buy the set.

      The recall is for exactly this issue - those drain holes combined with the limited environmental capability of the tailgate electronics card inside the tailgate were a problem. The “safety issue” was the potential for the tailgate to spontaneously open, but all kinds of tailgate misbehavior can occur from water contamination of that control card.    There is no real fix yet. The initial recall just disabled the tailgate. Later, when parts became available, they would replace bad parts with new parts of the same bad design. My dealer is going nuts because the few times I let them get their hands on my truck, my tailgate is off due to a slide-in camper installation. They really want to cut my tailgate wires, but I won’t give them the chance. I will let them get their dirty hands on it when a real fix (redesign) is available.  My tailgate, which works just fine with sealant plugging the drain holes, will remain safe in a dry storage crate until then.

      Yes your absolutely right, I been looking at the 4 inch BDS one and it acutely states you can use the stock 20’s just not the 17’s or 18’s, I also didn’t realize that with my 275/60r20 stock wheels I’m already running 33 inch diameter wheel setup lol so I can just run my stock wheels and tires atleast to start.

      I would expect that to be lift-kit dependent.  If the kit has interference issues w stock wheels, then the kit/manufacturer should indicate that somewhere.
