There's no excuse for an engine to be burning through oil and needing to add oil after 50,000 miles on the engine. When the low oil light came on and told me it was low I took it to the dealership to investigate the problem. The dealership is trying to tell me it's normal (to get me past the warranty). However, they're talking out of both sides of their mouth by telling me it's normal oil consumption rates even though I keep getting a low oil alert 2,000 miles before an oil change. Because if it's normal then, according to them, I should be able to keep driving another 2,000 miles on low oil until I'm due for that oil change. I'm not sure how long the engine can run on low oil, but I guarantee if I did that then they would sing a different tune that there was a problem and I should have brought it in to get looked at and then it would be my fault.

I think we've gotten a little off topic. The original post wasn't about should you check the oil every time you fill up with gas. The original post was why is the truck burning through oil so fast? Why is the truck getting low on oil 2,000 miles before its due for an oil change? Why is this happening on an engine with only 50,000 miles? And is anyone else having this problem?

Your 'best' line is that it is a new symptom of your engine. It didn't use this amount earlier.

 

It probably still is an 'acceptable' amount of usage to fall within acceptable operating parameters to avoid having to warranty it.

 

Grumpy explained it all pretty well. Your options aren't great, fight GM, sell it, fix it, add a quart between oil changes. 

 

For what its worth, EVERY vehicle I've ever done an oil change on has had less oil come out in the drain pan than what gets dumped back in. Usually about a quart. Regardless of make, age, mileage, use, etc.

 

Not calling anyone out, arguing/fighting anyone, but if you tell me yours doesn't use a drop, my first response is BS until I see you measure out the drain pan.

I can't believe they are STILL having issues with this and something needs to be done! They've long since known about the excessive oil consumption, going back at LEAST to the 2014's. There are numerous tech service bulletins about this very thing. If something isn't done, then more and more people will find themselves in our shoes. After purchasing our 2015 Silverado, we brought it in numerous times for the excessive oil consumption.  Initially we were told it was the trans cooler lines or oil cooler lines (can't recall which) and that if it had been the other It would have been covered under warranty but this was a non warranty item. Had it "fixed" . 

 

Continued to have problem. Only after our warranty expired did they finally acknowledge the issue and then stated we needed a new engine. They were right. We did but I didn't go through the dealership to have if done. I saw the parts of the engine and let me tell you it was the worst I've ever seen!!! The crank bearings...were gone..or fused to the crank. Same with rid bearings three bent rods. Everything gummed up to high hell. ****** ton of carbon everywhere. ****** ton of metal everywhere. Timing chain eating away at the oil pump,  causing metal to go into the engine because the timing chain guide was broken, burning and leaking oil and oil not getting to the top 1/2 of the engine for a while now. The block was the only thing semi ok. There was evidence someone had also been in there previously.

I'm starting to think it is a ring coating issue. Moly and chrome have been around forever. But CrN facing and bore spraying are more recent. Seems the ring coatings are delaminating. 

 

Why use them? Friction reduction. When we had moly rings the bore to ring friction was about 40% of the total parasitic drag. These coatings greatly reduce that. Problem is the same as the 1970's EGR pump. We know what to do but we don't know how to do it so let's experiment on the public and get them to pay for the research. IMHO of course. 

 

Anyway, once the coating fails the steel ring (used to be iron) wears the bore rapidly and the result is loss of conformity which give the oil a straight path to the combustion chamber. Blown ring seal. 

 

@customboss would be way more familiar with these coatings than I. I retired 15 years ago. He more recently and has better contacts. 

 

Dizzy has been using oil since 80K on the clock. Now has almost 235K and still using. I keep adding. It keeps going.

I have the same exact issues and they keep recommending me to pay to diagnose it.  The dang thing is under warranty.  Two quarts low at 4k, and have to add two quarts every time.  They all consumption test only does every every thousand miles for three inspections. My oil doesn’t start burning until it gets after the 3000 as soon as it hits 4000 miles I’m almost exactly 2 quarts low.  They tell me that’s normal which with all the cars I have I’ve never had that problem before with any of them. And I get a misfire two or three times on multiple cylinders every day it’s been in and out of the shop at least eight times and three times for an oil consumption test. I think they know there’s a problem they’re just trying to get out of it because they’re a lot of vehicles out there that have the same issue after reading a bunch of message boards started about click 60. They say it’s out of warranty now but I have the extended warranty. I think GM just trying to kick the can down the road so they don’t have to fix all the vehicles because it will be a massive recall. It’s back in the shop now for the same reason. I’ve always been to GM guy, but after this, I think I’m done.

Same thing here truck is shiny and gorgeous and uses more oil than my 1933 Hot Rod or my old Ford tractor.

GM is humping me like the guy on Deliverance.

Filthy B*stards, I will NEVER buy another GM after this even though they are offering 1.9% on he HD's..lol 😂

They are so stupid that when my oil does not register on the stick, they call it half a qt low and I say hey MOFOS I have a qt right here lets pour it in, they say well lets pull it into the shop and uhhh you are not allowed in there for safety reasons  Hhahaaa on me. it makes me want to go on a window spree at night with  a hammer .....just sayin.

FOCK GM they KNOW this is a problem and are burning us as they get another HUGE bailout from the taxpayers for their Biden EV screw ups.

One of the dumbest posts ever given the context of the post from the OP, 67K for a truck with 40K on it and you drive to AZ and back and the MOFO has used 2 qts of oil.  Now THAT is stupid and the manufacturer should be sued. 8 qt system for a reason..lol

Circle back, take a breath. It is wrong to use that much oil. It is wrong to not check it. But we all get taken by surprise now and again. You let that light come on more than once and you are no longer ignorant of your situation. Is that a compromise?

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
