I am looking to replace my 2011 LTZ and think the TB is the best looking trim on the lineup. However when configuring trucks online it seems like the TB is a very poor value in comparison to the others. Compared to a standard Z71 the only differences I can see are slightly better monotube Ranchos, the lift, blacked out trim and unique wheel/tire options. I don't know what pricing is like in the US, but here in Canada it's only $2k more to configure an LTZ Z71, and IMO you're getting alot more equipment on the LTZ. This is comparing both trucks with a 6.2L. I feel like there used to be a much larger price jump from LT to LTZ.

LT Trail Boss = RST with the factory lift, black front and bumpers.  

 

At camp GMC, the regular AT4 = SLT/Denali content with the factory lift.

LTZ way better value, everytime i see a TB I think the dude just doesnt know any better....your paying a premium for something you can do better....

 

AT4 is a different story....

'Value' of a trim level always depends on what options you want/require. 

 

Higher trim is a better value IF enough of the extra options are ones you would have added to the lower trim.

Add enough of them to the lower trim and the higher trim becomes a better value. 

 

If only interested in adding some -- then the extra's stuff on the higher trim is just crap you didn't want. 

 

 

All this was a lot easier to compare in brochures that listed the 'standard', 'optional', and 'not available' info each trim side-by-side in a chart.

I find this much more difficult (and frustrating) to do with the 'design/build' configurators.

The two major sticking points for me is that you cannot get the auto dimming inside rearview mirror unless you option towing mirrors, and no availability of a power passenger seat of any kind. I believe both these items were available on the LT trim in the previous generation. Absolutely ridiculous IMO for a vehicle with a base price of $70k CAD, and over $80k with options. There are many 2023 ZR2s sitting on the lots here, makes more sense to buy one of those over a TB if you can swing a deal.

I stole my last Trail Boss in early September. Now mine is a very "bare bones analog" type of truck compared to a LT, LTZ or a ZR2. 2024s are here. I bet you could negotiate a deal on a 2023. You don't have to buy local if you're going to get a smokin deal.

Yeah the TB is a pretty poor value compared to the LTZ.  I bought mine back before the shortage and GM was offering big incentives.  You could buy one below MSRP and get $5K off from GM.  Much better value back then..... now if I want to replace it I gotta spend $8K more than I did when I bought my 21.  No thanks.

Mechanically, the trail boss is a Z71 with a 2" lift and slightly different CV's.  You are much better served by doing a LTZ Z71, especially if you plan on doing suspension work.

you can't get the single best engine in all half tons in the LTZ so that's poor value imo and the LT TB 2.7 is the chicken dinner, and actually the custom with your own lift is also, the 2-spd transfer case useless, the gaudy black accents and shat 18" duratracs also need to go, the TB is the easy button though but I think non TB and diy is better then you leave off the mud holding service inhibiting skid plates that are useless for everyone as no one takes these trucks rock crawling, too expensive so it's muddy forestry, farms, snow etc. so less is more (no skids), skip the heavy bed liner, rubber bed mat is the only thing you need for protection and hold yer junk still, sides will never rust out, scratches in actual pain color are cool...don't add the weight and cost

I will respectfully disagree on a few opinions here:

1.  The 2-Speed Transfer case is not useless, its a lifesaver when needed.  It has saved my a$$ a few times when trying to get heavy trailers over certain obstacles that 4-HI just spun the tires on.  For controlled power delivery, there is no substitute for 4Low and I'll never own a 4X4 without that option again.

2.  The 18" Wheels are superior by ALL engineering aspects for off road driving when compared to the 20's or 22's.  The increased sidewall makes a significant difference in tractability, control, and comfort.  The first thing I did was remove my 20's and put 18's on, and the difference was night and day when aired down and off road.

3.  I have beat the SNOT out of the skid plates on this truck.  Yeah, it would be nice if they were beefier, but they are definitely better than nothing at all.  I would probably be on my second or third transfer case if not for the skid plates.  Also, my skid plates are not interfering with my vehicle maintenance in any way, shape, or form, so I am not real certain about the "service inhibiting" part, but then again I don't have a 2.7 so there might be something there I am unaware of.

 

If your looking for the "bang for the buck" off road GM truck, finding a Custom model combined with the Z71 package (if its possible) would be ideal.   If you are going to be doing suspension anyway, there is no reason to pay for the TB.

I disagree with several things you wrote within regards to the Trail Boss. Ganly summed it up nicely up above within regards to tires/wheels, two speed transfer case, & skid plates. Not adding a bed liner too me lacks common sense. And the reason a lot of us who have trail bosses don't like the chrome that's included in a lot of the  other models-The same goes for those of you that feel that the LTZ is a better value. Nothing is a better value if you don't like it. Some customers like chrome others don't. I have about all the options available on the LTZ.

Yes the appearance of the Trail Boss is what draws me in, I love the black accents, too much chrome on the LTZ for me. I also happen to like the fake hood scoop, and the 18" wheels are the best looking wheel across the entire lineup IMO. I don't know why GM didn't keep in line with the two previous generation trucks where the Z71 option got you body colour bumpers and grille regardless of trim level. The Trail Boss should be an option package, not a trim level. GM makes the truck I want, it's called the Sierra AT4, I just prefer the Chevy styling.

Got this one 3 months ago 2023, killer deal. Not a lot of options but I like it.

I purchased a 2021 a couple of weeks ago. It was an LT TB. It has everything I want, including leather interior, and nothing that I don’t. Heck, I had to look hard to find one without a moonroof. It did come with black snowflake 20’s though. I wanted 18’s. But I have to admit, they are growing on me. I do wish I had a little more sidewall though. it came with 295/55 R20 Trail Grapplers that will need to be replaced in a few months.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
