Reverse light mod ideas (no bulb replacement)

I'm looking to add more light to the back of the truck (2023 Silverado 1500 LT) for more visibility when backing up in the dark. LED bulb replacement is not an option for me, since I have aftermarket tailights. 

 

I looked into VLED LP-X but customer support told me it wont work because Silverado's trailering system will interfere with it. I asked if I could wire tap into the cargo light wires, so that the lights turn on when I toggle on cargo lights, but he wasn't sure if that would work or not.

 

Anyone have tried VLEDS or any other types of lights for reverse light? Any recommendations welcome!

I used this wiring harness from amazon to tie into my factory lighting system. I have 2 rigid flush mounted lights in the pockets on the rear bumper.  It has zero effect on the trailering system.

The Curt harness won't work on a GM because the 7 way plug is dead except for 12V+ and ground unless it detects a trailer plugged in. You need the harness that plugs in between the tail light wiring t

You will need to wire the lights into a relay. The factory circuit will overload and shut off the lights when you add any additional lights. You can use the reverse light wire in the tail light as the trigger wire for the circuit. You can use the 12V+ from the trailer wiring circuit as the power source for the relay circuit.

@nlindste I am looking at doing something similar,and trying to visualize this all while parts are en route - does the putco harness go between the trailering plug and the body harness as well as have to tap/connect into the taillight harness? Or just behind the bumper, and then some connecting to whatever auxiliary reverse lights you are adding?

Have you considered auxiliary lights? I've had success with Rigid Industries D-Series lights. You can mount them strategically, and they're pretty bright.

Also, don't overlook the possibility of integrating fiber optic lighting You could discreetly embed them into the truck bed or along the bumper. Sync them up with your reverse lights without messing with the trailering setup.

Another idea is using motion-activated LED strips. Strategically position them in the bed, and they'll illuminate when you start reversing.

Just to follow up (in case this helps anyone else) - I used the Putco harness. The reverse power comes from the driver's side, as does 3 of the four wires for the extra 4 pin connector (the green power wire is the only one to come from the passenger's side). As I was only using the harness to power auxiliary reverse lights (which I wanted automatically tied in to my truck's reverse function, no extra switch needed), I cut off the 4 pin connector on the Putco harness (which means that I no longer needed the passenger side connection at all), and used the reverse wire and ground wire coming off of the driver's side piece of the harness (capping off the other two wires and hiding the ends in the loom). Power from my auxiliary lights connected to the white wire from the harness, ground from each light to the black wire...and I am in business. No issues, works exactly as I had hoped - and looks factory in the way that it all connects in (and easily removable without lasting effect because of the Putco harness).IMG_20240209_201518.thumb.jpg.fea708da14088ccf2246c16d6b78ad67.jpg

That's a LOT of money for something you can't even use when you have your hitch in and NEED lights to hook or unhook a trailer in the dark!

It is...it went onsale during xmas time for $50 off which is still expensive imo. However for me, it'd work as I almost never tow anything, much less have to hook up in the dark. 

 

There's also the boostauto mod that's super cheap. How well it works I don't know. Was considering that too or maybe both

Why have a truck if you don't tow?

 

I made my own "boost auto" mod for a few cents. I have it set so the reverse lights come on when I press the cargo light button so it makes it super bright along with the LED cubes I added to the bottom of the hitch. Works great for hooking up a trailer or loading stuff in the bed in the dark.

      I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.

      Thanks to the convenience of Amazon, I was able to get a few things done to the truck today.  I installed Carquest Premium oil and air filters with five quarts of Mobil1 High Mileage 10-30 along with a quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 I already had.  The latch for the flip up center console lid was broken so I replaced it along with the power mirror switch.  I found my push retainer assortment this morning and reattached the plastic under the bumper and it was only held on with a few screws and retainers.  Then I programmed a new remote keyless entry fob so I can lock my dog in the truck when I take her out with me (I've got to keep the air going for her since it's been in the 100s).  Finally, I ordered some LED interior bulbs and replaced the reading lamps.  The front lights are working fine while one of the back lights only works intermittently and the other not at all.   While under the truck, I found the source of at least one of the noises: the sway bar links need replacing.  I ordered a set of Suspension Dudes links with Code Red bushings.  Never heard of them, but they're made in the USA and have decent reviews.  While making yet another Amazon order, I went ahead and added a set of front tow hooks.  I went with red, since that's the color of the sway bar link and bushings and it should look decent enough on a black and chrome truck.  Speaking of which, it doesn't bug me much, but the passenger side mirror has a chrome cap while the driver side doesn't, so eventually I'll make them match one way or another.  Oh, and I ordered a $20 TPMS reset tool.  No idea if it will do anything for my sensors but it was cheap and will work for the Ford Transit Connect as well.     For tradition's sake, I ordered a new oil change wrench.  I kept the Snap-On 9/16"x15mm GM wrench I bought when I was 18 in the 2006 GMC from the time I bought that truck until the truck was lost.  While I was tempted, there's no need to spend $80 for a new SO wrench, or even $50 with shipping for a used one on Ebay.  I just bought a Duratech 15mm extra-long ratcheting wrench to do the job as needed.  It works, and if I like that wrench enough, I'll buy the set.

      The recall is for exactly this issue - those drain holes combined with the limited environmental capability of the tailgate electronics card inside the tailgate were a problem. The “safety issue” was the potential for the tailgate to spontaneously open, but all kinds of tailgate misbehavior can occur from water contamination of that control card.    There is no real fix yet. The initial recall just disabled the tailgate. Later, when parts became available, they would replace bad parts with new parts of the same bad design. My dealer is going nuts because the few times I let them get their hands on my truck, my tailgate is off due to a slide-in camper installation. They really want to cut my tailgate wires, but I won’t give them the chance. I will let them get their dirty hands on it when a real fix (redesign) is available.  My tailgate, which works just fine with sealant plugging the drain holes, will remain safe in a dry storage crate until then.

      Yes your absolutely right, I been looking at the 4 inch BDS one and it acutely states you can use the stock 20’s just not the 17’s or 18’s, I also didn’t realize that with my 275/60r20 stock wheels I’m already running 33 inch diameter wheel setup lol so I can just run my stock wheels and tires atleast to start.

      I would expect that to be lift-kit dependent.  If the kit has interference issues w stock wheels, then the kit/manufacturer should indicate that somewhere.
