A coworker and I both bought trucks about mid-May last year. I bought a HD2500 and he bought the 1500 Duramax. We were both in Houston this week for training and his (still new to him) got jacked from the hotel parking lot Thursday morning. His OnStar started sending him alerts around 4am of malfunctions for multiple systems. The Police viewed the hotel security footage and stated 2 individuals rolled up at 3:56am, both climbed out and while once went under the front end (The Police stated to supposedly cut the horn wires) while the other entered the cab. They rolled out with his truck at 4:01am (5 minutes) later.

Let it be known that I despise frick'n thieves...

Lots of possibilities here.  His doors could have been unlocked which would have made any thief's job easy.  The ECMs are unfortunately rather easy to get to on the T1 trucks.  If they've got some sort of "hot swap" ready to use ECM, I could see them doing it in 5 minutes time.  There's been theft on the K2 generation and same thing, they access the ECM and swap in a unit that is somehow set up to power the truck.

He was certain it was locked. there was an outside plastic chrome door handle left on the ground where it was pared. I think a Tundra was also jacked.

Houston is not a good area. At this point in the game I just choose to stay in good areas. Getting harder and harder though.

Cant onstar track the truck?

That sucks that the truck was stolen. I didn’t think it was so easy to steal a modern push start vehicle. I do know that key fobs can be made from scanning signals.

I can see where my truck is located on the map on MyGMC app on my phone.

He contacted OnStar and they said his plan didn't cover tracking, although he said he was paying about $60 a month for his plan. His Chevy app still showed it at his house in Marshall, TX around 250 miles form Houston.

Worthless then. Good grief. I hope your buddy gets its all resolved in the end.

Sorry to hear that.  My 2005 Duramax was stolen in 2022 in a similar fashion, 5 minutes, locked in a hotel parking lot, fully loaded with a boat on top, and all my camping and fishing gear on my way home from a 1-week trip.  Never saw it again.  If I could get 1 thing back it would be the GoPro footage from my trip.  It took me a year to get a replacement long-bed gas truck which I got last July.  I subscribe to OnStar knowing they will track and slow down the stolen truck.  The plans state, including your friend's plan, "If someone tries messing with your car, we’re on it. We’ll be tracking it and working with the police* to slow it down and help recover it. Car thieves don’t stand a chance".  Apparently, the thieves are able to disable that function easily?  I assumed GM would secure the components for this reason?  In retrospect, I wish I would have pulled a fuse or relay out of my truck and maybe they would not have stolen it.  I have looked at the fuses and relays in my new 2024 truck and narrowed it down to some choices but I don't know enough about them.  Does anyone have a suggestion of what fuse or relay would be the best for removing to help prevent theft?  44, FTZM ignition.  46, engine control module ignition.  69, starter motor.  78, engine control module.  86, engine control module.  87 and 90, injectors.  Relay 70, starter motor.  Relay 77, powertrain.  Someone will suggest installing a kill switch and I am aware of that and have done it on a previous truck, but am looking for a different solution now.

Sorry to hear that.

Makes me think twice about upping my subscription with OnStar now. I keep an Apple Air Tag in my truck and my Bronco, both hidden away.

So the latest is the truck has been recovered. Very little information other than the Police were raiding a house for another offence and stumbled upon some vehicles that had been reported stolen. The truck only had some body damage on the drivers door from them ripping off the door handle. Appears they had pulled the dashes left and right fuse block cover panels off. Maybe looking for trackers? I don't know.

Glad he got t back, there are Faraday pouches on  Amazon and also they make a kill switch that has its own remote so that you can still us your remote start, so 2 remotes but one is killing ALL power coming out of the battery until it is activated.

Just a thought, I use the faraday pouch at home and on the go, the work, I tested it from inside the vehicle itself and NADA.

I saw on youtube the bastards went on a guys front porch and stole the signal from his remote and then used it to drive off in his rig right from his driveway.

Cheers

Hey, on the 2024 Duramax, what was the color of it in and any identifying stickers? Had a suspicious Facebook message request about a trade so I googled a stolen vehicles matching the description in this popped up.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
