alvocado Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I'm having an issue with excessive outer tire wear on a 2011 GMC Yukon despite the alignment checking within factory spec. I changed both front lower control arms in June and had the truck aligned the following day. Arms were installed per factory set, torqued at ride height. Two mos. later, the outer edge of both right side tires shows noticeable wear and is causing increased road noise. I took the truck in today and the alignment still reads within spec. Struts are Bilstein with <100k miles. All other components are factory with 213k miles on the truck. Any advice from others who have seen this or knowledgeable of alignment would be appreciated.

They cup / feather on the outside edge, even when everything is new / tight up front, pressures set right for the weight of the vehicle, and alignment is spot on. These trucks handle amazing, but they still weigh 5-6k lbs., so if you drive aggressively, they'll cup or wear on the outer edges. If the alignment is right, it's right. I'm not an alignment guy and never have been, but I can't see how any damage from an accident, or whatever, could cause tire wear if everything is correct with the alignment ... unless it's the type that is referencing the rear axle which could be out of whack from the frame. That's a stretch, and I'm just thinking out loud.
Grumpy Bear Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Stock wheel and tire sizes? If so then: Again, there is "In Spec" and then there is "ON spec" alignment. IF you have both positive camber and positive toe the outside edge will feather. IF you don't rotate every 5K or so they will wear odd. Balance at least every 10K. Camber between -0.1 and -0.2 both sides and even AND a positive toe under .04 and even will help If your wheel offsets are different than factory, altering scrub radius OR the CASTER is above mid spec it will have issues. If there is too much thrust angle or steer ahead. IF you are running A/T tires perhaps nothing will help. 1
