There are 4 licensed Dexos R spec oils in 0w-40 flavor.

The Dexos licensing site - dexos®R | GM

Mobil 1 Supercar, Mobil 1 FS, Mobil 1 ESP x4 and Mobil 1.

Thanks for that.

Now to the real question at hand, can you please clarify exactly what GM is recommending? Is it wny 0w40 oil that is DEXOS R, or do they specify an exact formula? For example, can we use ANY of the ones listed that GetGone pointed to?

I specifically stated that the European formula doesn't show Dexos R on the bottle, so I don't know if that's just because they haven't updated the labels yet or what's out there is older stock before being Dexos R approved. Either way the website shows it's approved.

Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40 advanced synthetic motor oil is the result of almost 24 months of grueling tests and precise engineering. While the viscosity is identical, the formulation of Mobil 1 Supercar 0W-40 motor oil is specifically designed to guarantee it meets the strict dexosR-spec required for all fourth-generation and later Corvette models.

So if all the rest of the 0W40 Mobil 1 variants ALSO meet Dexos R spec, then you can use any of them. HOWEVER in Amsoil's case, ONLY their Signature series 0W40 meets Dexos R spec. They offer OTHER 0W40's but they don't meet Dexos R spec per the data sheets on Amsoil's site.

Theoretically...yea...you probably can run another 0w-40 that's not on the list.  I'd garner that nobody has bothered to license yet to Dexos R or they are waiting to get them and have submitted testing that shows they meet the spec.  At the end of the day, Dexos is just a licensing game.  Amsoil for example doesn't pay for the licensing but does all the testing for all the specs out there with independent labs and then they'll update their spec sheets accordingly to what they've tested to and meet/exceed.

Something like Pennzoil Platinum Euro, or Castrol Edge Euro, or even Valvoline Euro would work.

Why Euro?  Something to keep in mind here is that Dexos R is really just the Dexos 2 spec in disguise.  Dexos 2 got split up in the last year or two into two different brandings.  You still have Dexos 1 Gen 3 which covers 99% of gas engines.  Dexos 2 oils used to cover US performance cars, Euro gas and diesels under 8500 GVWR.  That got split into gas (Dexos R) and diesel (Dexos D).

Dexos R has only the two weights (5w50 and 0w40) as Dexos R is so far only spec'd for GM's sports cars and now the 6.2s that passed the recall and run 0w40.  Dexos R REALLY exists for the sports cars as being it was part of Dexos 2, its a low ash requirement in that spec.  In 2019 GM switched the LT1, LT4 and LT5s over to 0w40 Mobil 1 ESP Formula.  ESP = Emissions System Protection.  You were allowed to then run one oil for street and track without having to switch to a track spec'd oil, which they did prior to 2019 (except for LT5) because they went to a low ash oil (better on the cats).

Also, to circle back to the 6.2 recall.  Replacement engines go back on a 0w20 diet.  So 0w40 only matters post Pico passing of the recall, and until that engine gets replaced, unless it survives.

So being regular 0w-40 Mobil 1 is an approved Dexos R oil, as well as their ESP formula, something like Pennzoil Platinum or Platinum Euro, or Castrol Edge or Edge Euro, or even Valvoline Euro would work.

So, are you saying GM does not specifically say in the recall we need to run Dexos R, and only need to something that's 0w40? I ask, because, for some reason, I never got the insert, only the cap, so I don't know if the insert specifies Dexos R, or even a specific formula like SuperCar for that matter. I can only go by what I see posted on the internet, and you know how that is. Since you're at a franchise dealership, I trust that you have access to the official standing on what oil they are spec'ing.

GM primarily is calling for Dexos R spec which now has more approved oils to that spec.  Mobil 1 FS which is one of the alternatives dealers can use for stock is Mobil 1 Euro Car Formula.  It is NOT branded on the package as Dexos R (likely due to the stock on hand) but is approved.  So anyone's Euro spec 0w-40 would be the ideal choice to run if you can't access Mobil FS Euro or Supercar easily.

I did edit my other post, it seems that the one on the Dexos site that is listed as "Mobil 1" doesn't exist on the Mobil site, just the Euro stuff.

Just watched another YouTube video, 2026 caddy with a 6.2 already had an engine replacement nuked a second one, another bottom end failure meaning GM has done 0 to try and fix this issue and it remains even in the new 26 model year. Sorry owners looks like to me GM is just moving on to the new gen v-8's and letting 6.2 owners to deal with this themselves. All they will do for you is replace the bad motor with a new one that has the same flaws.

Also for the it's the oil weight people, i have been running 0-20 for 11 years now.... Major difference from my 6.2 verses ones made from 2019-to present is the bottom end parts are not sourced form a trash Mexican supplier called Questum Macimex!

Figures! Just curious if, regardless of what plant at which a truck was built, it will have those bad parts of which you speak?

From everything i have seen regarding this issue to me it is the finishing of surfaces like the crank journals, even lifters i watched a video of a guy doing a tear down and all the surfaces are rough and not smooth.

Yeah, I saw that one, too, a while back. I thought this would be the last truck I would buy. Looks like it will instead be the last GM truck, sepcially since they are also pushing to sell vehicles that we also have to have subscriptions for to enjoy all its features.

Sorry but I didn't read very much of the thread but here is my experience.

2024 Sierra Denali, 37K miles, no noise or any other indications, I was going to have the inspection on my next oil change

I stopped at a stop sign, waited my turn and when I pressed on the gas it died. Tried to restart and it would not. Waited a few minutes and tried again. It started and said low oil pressure so I limped it to the nearest safe location and parked. Called Onstar and they sent a tow truck. He says lets try to start it. We do and no check engine light. Seems to idle fine and although I'm in a noisy location, it sounds okay. He said he had the same situation with a Tahoe a few days ago. The dealership I use is only about 5 miles away so I decide to drive there. Then halfway there while I am driving 65mph on the interstate it completely shuts down. I was in the right lane and pulled off to the shoulder. Kinda scary. Call Onstar again and a tow truck comes and takes it to the dealership. This is on a Saturday around 5:30pm by the time it gets to the dealership. They call me on Monday and tell me it needs an engine replacement but they don't have one in stock but have one coming in soon. They following Monday they call and tell me it is ready. They had it less than 6 working days. So far, so good, 5 days and about 200 miles.

Side note...I looked at the paperwork and it showed $17,516!!!

What oil are they recommending for your replacement, 0w20?
