It only took the dealer and GM corporate three days to get me a loaner when my 6.2 failed the pico test. Don't plan on one immediately if you need one.

Your case was different. They knew they had you hostage! 😱 Seriously, though, how are things with the new motor, still good?

A mechanical engineer friend of mine started following this saga, and just yesterday said to me, "Just looking at the size of the chamfers on the crankshaft oil ports alone, there's something wrong right there, never mind the other obvious problems. It's likely every single engine has a problem, and will all fail prematurely at some point. Interestingly, I can't find anywhere where GM has stated that the problems have been resolved, so how do you know that even a new engine won't fail, too?" I said that the recall only covers up to 2024  models, and he asked again, "Where is it that they state that the issues were resolved for the 2025 and on engine? And, what about the widening of the initial recall to include more prior years?"

Yikes, is he right? I did read an article a couple of days ago that GM is going to replace this model motor with a 6.6 soon, and the 5.3 will be replaced with a 5.7. Rhetorically, is that an indication that they haven't really solved the problems with the small block, so they're scrapping it altogether? Disclaimer: I have no evidence to support that last statement, and am only wondering that because I dont recall reading anywhere myself where GM has said they've resolved the issues pertaining to the 6.2 recall, even though they're replacing engines when absolutely necessary.

The Gen 6 engine has been in the works for years. It's just progression of what is currently available. It has nothing to do with the current 6.2 engine or issues they have had with it. The failed lifters in both the 5.3 and 6.2 have seemed to have disappeared. I haven't heard about that much in the last 2 years.

My 6.2 passed the pico test this morning. 11,854 miles

Mine recently passed, too, but the more we learn what is actually happening to the engines, the more I wonder if passing is really not a good thing. Is it just a matter of time before mine goes when I'm towing my bass boat through switchbacks with no shoulder on a non-lit two-lane road coming back at night from a remote lake? I think it's reasons like that why several forum members have bitten the bullet and jumped ship, regardless of the loss they've undoubtedly taken on the sale of their trucks.

I wish I could believe GM's estimate that they expect that only 3% total will fail prematurely. But the fact is, they already had almost 15,000 reported issues before even issuing the recall. While 3% of 800,000 engines worldwide doesn't sound like alot, that's still 24,000 engines. Given how they've handled this issue, GM is very possibly understating that 3%. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out to be 3% per year over the next 10 years. 😱

Dropped mine off Wednesday for my appointment Thursday. Of course a saleswoman jumped on me calling me and emailing and texting me trying to sell me a new vehicle. I was wondering how many engine hours people have that have failed and how many don't turn off the auto stop crap. I ALWAYS turn it off as part of starting my truck.

Even with passing the Pico test, my thinking is starting to align with MrPbFt. Ok, it has passed but does that guarantee it is working as I tow horses through rural areas and the engine may crap out. I know there are no guarantees regardless of brand, but GM is making me think twice.

It's not like we bought budget trucks, either!

Btw, I'm a city folk and just wondering, how much weight are you pulling when you tow horses?

The bumper pull trailer is about 2800 pounds and the pony is about 900 pounds and if another horse is loaded they are about 1200 pounds - so close to 5000 lbs. - not tremendous weight but tremendous attitude

Oh, so not that much more than a bass or normal ski boat, I guess. I always thought pulling horses required a 2500, cause that's what I see people towing horses with. I wonder why they go to the bigger truck when the 1500 can do just fine.

He did mention it was a pony at 900lbs.  Full grown horses would require a 2500 or 3500.

Read his message again. He can add another 1200 lbs. horse.

If you are towing more horses or using a gooseneck trailer I would opt to go larger but a bumper pull 2-horse is fine in the 1500 - now that being said more grunt is never a bad thing

Dealer called this afternoon and had my truck ready to pick up. Passed the test and didn't need to keep it overnight. My appointment was at 11am today and had dropped it off yesterday afternoon. They called at 3pm today that it was ready to go. They changed the oil and flashed the ECM. I had read something about a new ECM program to better detect the issue and set the P016 code. I talked to the service advisor while waiting for them to bring my truck around. He said most of the ones that failed were in the 10-15K miles. Only a few had failed the test. He said most failed while driving. He did say there was one truck that had failed at almost 100K miles.

Things seem to be just fine. I'll post here if I have any problems.

Mine failed the pico test at just over 40,000 miles.

    • Do you remember that Harley Davidson was more successful (solvent) when it produced about 60% of the market demand (by design) and forced wait times of up to three years? Even when your turn came around it was, "Take what we are giving you or move to the back of the line and start over". HUGE markup's were 'normalized' and dealer killed. 40% markup and no floor plan? What's not to love? Greed will kill them yet. They have surplus production and customer base is tanking. And still they think nosebleed pricing will work.
    • The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.
    • Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
    • I can't believe that could possibly be the case. It should be 36mo/100k miles from installation. Then again, it also seems like since a dealership installed it, it'd all be in the system and you wouldn't need to worry about registering, either. Shows you what I know. 😄 Hope this one outlives the warranty!
