OK. Let's Debate...

Hey guys. Just doing some brainstorming here. Thinking about a different truck lately. Here's what I have now...

2002 Chevrolet Silverado Z-71

Extended cab 4-door

5.3, Automatic

Fully loaded LS package

Including power buckets and console

Everything on the truck is great, except the miles. 59,900 miles. I bought this thing with 56,000 on it in June. Yeah, alot of miles for an 02 model!

Now, the only thing this truck will need, in the future, is a set of tires. Current tires have 8000-10,000 left on them. But everything else on the truck is cool.

Trade it in NOW, before it hits 60,000 miles, for a new one, or Keep It??

Truck is paid off, and $$$ is not a problem.

Sorry when I said what would you get for it, I meant what kind of vehicle, not money. I guess the big question would be do you NEED a different truck??? But don't listen to me...it's not what you need it's what you WANT

Actually ,I don't even really NEED a truck; I just like the 4x4 option, for winter, and the ability to haul things around when needed to.

I have owned 5 trucks, all of which had trailer hitches. I have never towed with any of my trucks.

One of my favorite trucks was a 1992 GMC 1500 4x4, reg cab, stepside model. Was an absolute blast to drive.

I have found a few new 04 Chevy/GMC models I like; it's just that the resale sucks on reg cab trucks.

It is nice to have an extended cab 4-door model; but honestly, I don't need all the room. Just wasted space.

Honestly, if I were you, I would hang on to what you currently have, especially if the thing is paid off. I took out a 5 year note on mine in Feb. of 2002, so I have just under three years until mine is paid off. I, too, have almost 55K on mine, and it will have around 120K when paid off, but I can't wait. These trucks will drive dependably for 150K plus, and when it does start having problems at that high mileage, I plan on keeping it and then buying something else. Enjoy having a few extra hundred bucks each month from not having a car note!

Just felt tempted to upgrade as well while the neighbors traded in 2 Fords on a 04 1500 LT Crew Cab. I discovered the rebates weren't as good as I thought, and it's a lot nicer not having the monthly payments...my truck is a 99 with 60k on the clock. Drive the truck, save your cash for an upgrade when this truck is truly worn out.

Keep it, they look better and will probably hold up better then the newer models, you know how engineers like to change things and use cheaper parts as the years roll on.

i was trying to decide the same thing this past summer. i decided to keep my truck. it has 94k on it, but it still is very solid and runs great. i decided that i would keep it and make the payment that i was going to have to myself to hopefully save up enough to pay cash for the next one. (and hopefully not blow the money on future repair bills!).

another point too - if you have not actaully taken the truck in to see what they would give you for a trade - dont be so sure on getting $18.5k for it. dealers always give you less than you thing they should. thats another reason why i kept mine - the dealer was low-balling me on the trade.

but hey - if you have money to burn, get a new one! its always fun to get a new truck!

hey now dont stereotype ALL engineers

Its not always their fault its the companys. I was told something a few yrs ago to realize accountants run the world everyone else just lives in it and has to play by what they say

Yes that is a good point about the bean counters. They do rule how the companies can or can't do. Everyone else has to live with that. THEY DON"T!

I work for GM and I can see that every day.

To get back at the original question, it's simply a matter of what you want to do. If money is no object, Take a test ride in one of the new models and then decide if it's worth it for you. It sounds to me that you may just want to buy someting new because it's always FUN. I do that all the time. I buy something that I really don't need, but just have to have something different. It's always a good feeling  . I just did that this week. I had a leased 02 Trailblazer that I just loved. It was due to be turned in this June. At christmas I was determind not to trade in in early but guess what? I did. Bought the new 04 half ton Silverado Z-71 crew cab. Once I got the buying bug in my blood, I was done for! Maybe that's how a crack pipe addict feels. I don't know.

Anyways, good luck in your decision.

Frank
