Has anyone used Johnson Lifters instead of the GM/Delphi stock/LS7 lifters? From what I can tell, I've not seen anything bad about them and they seem to be preferred by a lot of people in other forums. I've seen it mentioned here a few times to go with Johnson lifters and not the LS7 lifters, but haven't seen anyone mention some of the specifics I'm looking for:

  • quiet/no ticking (quieter than stock GM lifters?)
  • long lasting
  • what size push rod did you need / any other changes other than the cam

TSP has a DOD/AFM DIY removal kit here, but it doesn't seem to offer any drop in push rods for the lifters. In fact, it seems they are out of Johnson lifters, but I've seem them available on other sites. https://www.texas-speed.com/p-5443-build-your-own-tsp-gen-5-lt1-lt4-l83l84-l86-l87-dod-delete-kit.aspx

You might want to contact GPI, they have a great reputation building LS/LT engines. The Johnson lifters are pricey.

Iirc not 100% sure,  but I remember the Johnson lifters being prime for engines with low vacuum. I think that was what everyone was choosing them for. Small cams did not need them as much. Been a decade since I built an engine, but that's what I remember.
