I don't want an oil burner/best oil to use

I have a 24’ 2500 that has run Mobil 1 Truck and SUV or regular Mobil 1 since 1k miles. Changed oil again at 5k and stuck w/ 5k intervals. Currently have about 38k on the truck. I don’t have any noticeable loss during an oci. Have had a couple of UOAs and everything looks great on the reports. 
 

I am not claiming or arguing that Mobil 1  is anything magical nor that it is the absolute “best” oil I can get, but it seems to work for me and my truck. I think almost any dex 1 gen 3 will work great in these engines.

Walmart 5-quart jugs and Costco 6-quart pack are a bargain versus everybody else. Costco puts them on sale a few times a year with $10 off too!

The difference morsno is I don't look for cheap oil. I buy Amsoil because I think it's a good product.

Why cheap out on a filter? change it and be done with it.

I think for the first oil change at around 500-600 miles I'm going with AC Delco 5w30.

And a PF63E filter.

That's what's in it right now and  I'm changing it again 1000 miles later so why not.

I think your post above of "A quick search Mobile 1 price I would buy Amsoil oil" could be read one of two ways:

 

1) Mobil 1 is still so expensive you'd rather just spend the money on Amsoil (this is how I read it).

 

2) Mobil 1 is cheap and therefore inferior (I can maybe see this based on your follow-up post).

 

Either way, based on you saying that you buy Amsoil because it's a good product, the comment on Mobil 1's price seems irrelevant unless you meant it's cheap and therefore bad.

How bout this, I use Amsoil OE line products because I think they are better than off the shelf products.

I don't see anything too wrong with that, after all a lot of vehicles do end up at dealers for oil changes and that is the oil they would be using or at least I presume so, probably far more the issue is that some customers are just not coming in near often enough to get their oil changed ... pushing it way too far on each oil change and not changing it sooner on the first oil change either, doing the absolute minimum because they have a completely different mindset and game plan for dumping the vehicle before the warranty is over and trading it in.

I should have worded my reply to the previous post better.  What I was saying is that Mobil 1 can be bought at reasonable prices at those locations.  I also have used Amsoil in my trucks many times over the years, but it is not always easily available, and Mobil 1 is.

OEM spec oils limit but do not eliminate fouling. The longer they are run the less effective they are at keeping it clean

Understood for longer term development of oil usage, but do you think that’s the issue for the folks here that are reporting high oil usage from the first oil change?  I’m suspicious the rings are never seating properly.  I admit it’s a guess on my part. We see that sometimes in the post overhaul run in of aircraft reciprocating engines. You do the initial run in process, then measure oil consumption. If it’s excessive, it’s new rings again and rehoning the cylinders unless you find a clear different cause of the oil loss. I will ask one of the industry experts i know if he knows what the dominant cause in those cases is.

If the oil is changed at regular intervals or per OLM (also regular), it won't matter which brand that someone uses. Nor will it affect the potential for having an oil-burning engine. Simple, routine maintenance is all we can do.

I was reading through what it stated in the manual to see if it would elude to any suggested distance for severe use as manuals always used to years ago and I never saw them commit to anything other than stating to go by the OLM. Because I haven't driven far at all on any oil change, nor towed with my truck I have no idea as to what distance the OLM would lead one to if working the truck. I imagine someone on here has a good idea though from having accumulated the miles and worked the truck towing to see what the magical computer has to say for itself. 

 

Under the so called normal service interval they don't actually say ( I thought they did but they don't now that I am reading it again ) to change the oil at 7500 miles but to check the OLM and change it if it says to do so or the one year mark. I am guessing the OLM will say change me no matter how few miles on the truck if a calendar year passes but I have no idea if it counts down on its own like that. So just how far the OLM would allow the vehicle to travel distance wise before counting down to 0 if one was driving long distances day after day, I would be curious to know what it would do. 

 

Something I had missed seeing before in the manual and admittedly I have not even remotely read it from cover to cover, is this comment on page 312 which probably would not sit well with ( and no one like that would be on this forum ) those that never lift the hood of their own vehicle and assume the shop that does their maintenance on their vehicle is responsible for everything. Back in the day there was a plus for full service service stations, they actually checked the oil etc for those that never did it otherwise.

Check the engine oil level regularly, every 650
km (400 mi), especially prior to a long trip. The
engine oil dipstick handle is a loop. See Engine

At under 40 bucks for 10 quarts of oil, I personally will never be going by the oil life on the dash because it would have me changing it at over 7k miles. I just change it when it’s around 4k at a convenient time. I’m actually going to do it soon at just under 3k miles due to time. I have only put like 2,700 mi on since I last changed it dec 31st 2024! Between my little around town car that gets 40mpg and my motorcycle I just didn’t drive my truck a ton. 
but I do want to do it while it’s still a bit warm out. My other vehicles I can change the oil inside the garage with the door closed but not the truck.
