Quick ?: Is 5w-50 Synthetic good for my 5.3??

All I have ever used is the recommended 5w-30... switched to mobil 1 at very low mileage. Some oil change jock told me the 5-50 synth would be even better. Of course, it is on for cheap at the big box store... My pal has a new Chrysler Crossfire, and it takes 0w-50 synth if you can believe it... Any advice would be appreciated, before I pour this stuff in... Thanx

Nope. Don't do it..... Go with the factory recommendation, preferably some synthetic or high-premium dino oil. But, go with the factory recommendation on the oil weight.

Thanks. I did my homework while waiting for responses on here. Then, I went and bought the usual: Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30. Poured that stuff in the crankcase and went for a drive, hehehe

The thinner synthetic's 0-30, 5-30 and 10-30 will give you plenty of protection and will not steal hp like the heavier weight oils.

I use 10w30 Mobile 1 now. (Never gets very cold in NC). I have heard really good things about Mobile 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 and may use it when i have much higher miles on my truck. Say, over 100k.

I would only sugggest 5w50 if you have severe oil consumption.

I wish I had the time to sit down and explain it, but with twin 7yr girls, work and night college classes I just don't have that much time. Especially to explain it and make it easy to understand.

Check out Bobistheoilguy , it has a ton of info and it is easy to understand.
