Coolant Low Light

The 'Coolant Low' warning light keeps coming on, has been for about 2 months now. It seem to only come on after about an hour of continuous driving. I have checked the level many times, cold and hot, even added some once or twice. Just wondering if its common for the sending unit to go bad and display this message, or is the coolant actually low and I am just to much of a bone head to figure it out?

MIne does the same thing, about once every six months or so. Usually, mine comes on when I have been idling for a little bit or when I have been driving at fast interstate speeds (clearing throat..... )

After shutting the truck off and re-starting, it goes off. My fluid level is always where it is supposed to be.

I have wondered and even asked about it. My truck has been plugged in and no codes were thrown.

From what I have been told, no one has any idea. :flag:

Hopefully someone here will know! :flag:

Sounds like the coolant level sensor is going bad...not sure how common it is though. I'd also check the wiring to the sensor, and the connector at the sensor. I don't have a schematic with me (I'm at work right now), or I'd have more info for ya's...I can take a look later this evening though if nobody else comes up with anything.

Mine also did this on and off most of last year. The dealer could not explain it. I had to argue with them to get it fixed under warranty. The sensor itself can not be replaced. You have to replace the entire coolant tank assembly. Haven't had any problems since.

My 02 did it and the dealer said that sometimes dust gets in the sensors plug, he unpluged it and blew it out (no jokes) and no problems, he said also that it will come loose causing, light to come on.

I like that fix, alot cheaper than replacing the whole overflow reservoir! I only wish I could fix every problem with my truck like that!

Mine has come on 3 times in the little over three years that I've had my truck. I've always assumed it was the sensor because everything appears to be normal...

My Low Coolant light cam on at about 60,000 mi. It wasn't every time, kind of sparatic. I took it to my mechanic and had them flush the system and replace with new, I never mentioned the low coolant light. They did a pressure test and and everything checked out fine.

I'm at 94,000 mi and haven't had it happen since (truck is an '01).

I have a '97 Cadillac Eldorado ETC , I experienced the same symptons. It was the Low Coolant sensor, the sensor itself could not be replaced. The sensor is integrated into the recovery tank so the tank and sensor had to be replaced as one unit. It was not covered by my extended warranty, so I had to pony up to the bar to get it replaced.

That is most likely the problem you have. Good Luck!
