I have a '99 2wd 4.8l with the ever popular fuel gauge problem. I'm sure you are familiar with this. I have had my truck to the GMC dealer where I purchased the truck for service in the past and have been happy with their work. I wouldn't mind taking it there to fix the problem. What would I be looking at to fix the gauge? Can it be replaced without changing the entire fuel pump? Thanks!!

I had to replace the sending unit in my 99'Yukon. When the gauge showed empty I still had about 15 gallons in it.

 

When the stealer was attempting to remove the sending unit they claimed the module came apart. It was covered by another dealers extended warrranty and the repairs (parts and labor) was around $715.00. The parts were like $300.00 best I can remember.

The fuel level sensor should be available seperately for that vehicle. Without looking up the parts, I can't say absolutely positively.

 

The labor involved is no different, but the sensor is considerably less expensive than the whole module. Around $100 for the part, I'd say, but that's a real rough estimate.

THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR IS SEPERATE FROM THE PUMP.

GM LIST PRICE IS AROUND $150.

ITS EASY TO CHANGE.

1 UNBOLT FUEL FILLERNECK FROM BEDSIDE

2 UNPLUGG TAILLIGHT WIRING FROM UNDER REAR OF BED

3 REMOVE ALL BED BOLTS

4 REINSTALL PASSANGERS SIDE BED BOLTS BUT ONLY IN 2 OR 3 THREADS

5 LIFT UP DRIVERS SIDE OF BED PIVIOTING ON LOOSE RH SIDE BED BOLTS

NOW YOU HAVE TO JAM SOMETHING BETWEEN THE FRAME AND THE LIFTED UP BED TO HOLD IT UP. A MILK CRATE WORKS WELL BECAREFUL NOT TO LET THE BED RUB AGAINTS THE BUMPER OR THE CAB I USUALLY PUT SOME FENDER COVERS IN BETWEEN.

6 NOW YOU LOOKING AT THE TOP OF THE PUMP

7 PULL IT OUT SWAPP THE SENSORS BOLT IT BACK TOGOTHER

AND YOUR DONE

I HAVE NEVER BROKE A PUMP ON A PICK UP BY REMEVE THE BED

HOWEVER I HAVE BROKE SEVERAL BY DROPPING THE TANK ON TAHOES AND SUBURBANS
