Flushing the cooling system

I know this probably belongs in the engine section, but there just isn't much traffic there.

 

I'm getting ready to replace my water pump and have a few questions:

 

1. What is the correct way to flush the cooling system?

 

2. How do I seperate the clutch and fan from the water pump?  More to the point, I have the special tool to do it but what direction do I need to turn to loosen?

 

3. How do I dispose of used antifreeze?

For question number one I just usually drain the radiator and run fresh water through it until it comes out somewhat clean.  Then I fill the radiator back up with water and run the motor until the thermostat opens so the coolant trapped in the block will mix with the water I added.  I then drain the radiator again, flush it out with water, and call it good.  This won't get all the old antifreeze out, but it gets a good portion out.  Don't forget the clean out the coolant reservior as well.  You will have to add a bit more antifreeze then usual to get the poper mix of water and antifreeze.

 

Question 2 was already answered in the engine forum.

 

With question 3, I have no idea where you could take it.  I would look up the hazardous waste disposal places in the area and see if they will take it off your hands.
