Shocks...I know...Not again!

I know we've about beaten this topic to death. I don't want to get into which is better and why.

 

But I do want to know when is a good time to replace them. I've got a 2002 z71 with the original red shocks. I pulled one off the rear last night and couldnt compress it by hand. When I placed it on the floor...I could compress it and it returned very slowly. No leaks and I guess it rides fine.

 

I just can't justifiy spending 200 bucks on something that I'm not going to notice. If i put the 19.95 shocks on...am I only hurting myself????

Check EBAY I got factory take offs for 80$ and thay looked nerarly brand new. I didn't notice much of a difference add my truck had 120K miles on the originals.

I forgot to mention that I have about 50,000 on the truck. I think I'm gonna save the money...I can't imagine the shocks are worn out yet.

You outta just go to gmpartsdirect.com and get some OEM replacements. If you aren't having ride problems I wouldn't worry about it. But if you like the way the truck rode when it was new, just by some ACDelco OEMs and throw them on there. Then you know for sure that you're getting the right stuff.

You outta just go to gmpartsdirect.com and get some OEM replacements.  If you aren't having ride problems I wouldn't worry about it.  But if you like the way the truck rode when it was new, just by some ACDelco OEMs and throw them on there.  Then you know for sure that you're getting the right stuff.

Go to advance auto and get a pair of THESE.

Much better than stock and brand new for less than $80.

I replaced my OEM's at about 25K because I didn't like them. I replaced them with Bilstien HD with a significant improvement in ride quality particularly when towing. I then replaced the Bilstiens after 70K on them. They were not leaking but the bounce test showed they were getting loose.

 

The old standby test for me follows.

 

Bounce each corner by jumping on the bumper. The shock should stop the vehicle from bouncing in 1.5 cycles. If more than that, I believe they are worn too much and are affecting ride. I believe most shock manufacturers suggest replacing after 50K but then again, they want to sell you more so take that for what it's worth.

 

Also, I would not consider replacing with OEM due to cost and lousy quality IMO. Ever look at the price of the Auto-Leveling shocks or the variable valve ones? How does $300 for 1 shock sound
