Tranmission shifting with Cruise Control on

This may have been covered already and many times at that, but I am new to the forum and hadn't figured out how to do a search just yet.

 

I have a 2005 Silverado 4x4 with the 4.3L and Automatic. I have noticed that if I do not use cruise control, I can climb hills (highway at 70 mph) and the transmission first unlock the converter, then drop one gear from 4th to 3rd and pull strong. However, if cruise control is used, it will unlock the converter, then drop all the way down to 2nd gear, climb and then jump back into 4th with only a slight, short shift into third.

 

I have taken it back to the dealer and they claim this is normal. Is that true? Because I don't understand why I can drive it without it doing this, but as soon as the cruise is in control of maintaining speed, it shift erratic like this.

 

Any tips on what to look at to correct this? It sure sounds like it is hard on the transmission.

Dunno. The cruise does not control the throttle in as small increments as you do with your foot when it's trying to regain significant speed, so I'd say yeah, it's probably normal.

 

Just like when I pull out of a tollgate and hit resume. My truck accelerates pretty hard under the control of cruise, whereas I would probably accelerate more gradually if I was doing it myself. Does that make it abnormal behavior of the cruise? I think not.

I agree the cruise is less sensitive than the foot, but when the truck drops from 70 (set speed) to about 65 before the computer realizes it isn't holding asteady speed, and then drops two gears to make up for it's slow reaction and then slams back into Overdrive when it catches up....that doesn't seem like it should be normal. At first I thought it was just me with the 4.3L in a 4x4 that was having this problem, but I have heard that all the new GM trucks, regarless of powerplant, perform the same way. I still can not believe GM would think this is acceptable. Anyone else out there have the same complaint? Or better yet solution? :D BTW, I purchased the Hypertech PowerProgrammer III and it allows you to custom tune shift points. Can this be used to reprogram the down shifts? Anyone with experience on this?

Yep,As Wingnut said,Its normal,Both my '99 and my '04 do the same thing.

As far as the Hypertech Power ProgrammerIII,I have one on my '04 (I also had one on my '99) and love it,I wouldn't use anything else,You can reprogram the down shifts/shift points but it won't do anything for the harsh down shifts of the cruise.

Well I figured it out. ALL GM trucks behave like this, and according to GM it is normal, but that doesn't mean that it HAS to be like this. It is very harsh on the transmission and also on gas mileage. Using the Hypertech ProgrammerIII I was able to stop mine from doing this. It now drives much nicer on the highway. On a steep inclide with the cruise on (and Air as well, and even with the 4.3 L), it will unlock the converter, then drop one gear (if needed) and has plenty of power to pull the hills. It appears the gas mileage has gotten better as well, but I am only about half way through the tank full, so I'll know for sure soon. It also maintains a much steadier speed with cruise on. The simple trick is finding the right shift points to program. On mine, and I'll double check this weekend, I think it was 1-2 shift up 3 pmh, 2-3 shift down 5 mph, 3-4 shift up 3 mph. It is so nice to drive now!

Shu,Yes,Please check your shift points and let us know,I couldn't get the Hypertech to stop the harsh downshifts (with the cruise on) but maybe thats because I have the V8. :crackup:

I do have mine set at +3 mph 1-2 shift, -5 mph 2-3 shift and +3 mph on 3-4 shift. It works perfectly and absolutely no more dropping to second gear on the highway:) Just check my mileage, went from an average of about 15 to 16 up to 18 to 19. I am very pleased with this Hypertech PowerProgrammerIII.

I just tried 1-2 shift +3, 2-3 shift -4, and 3-4 shift +2 and that works well too. I'll keep playing with it and find the break point to when it wants to drop to second when pulling hills w/ cc on.

I haven't reprogrammed mine yet,but I might before next weekend because I'm going to Bristol,TN for the NASCAR races and I'll be able to try it out on the trip! :driving:

I know that when I bought mine it wouldn't work right out of the box because they said the dealer had changed something in my computer even before I bought it brand new. After I sent it to them to decode and reprogram, it has worked flawlessly since. I can definately feel the increase in performance and have seen an improvement in fuel mileage. There may be other brands out there that make more power than this one, but I could not find enough solid eveidence of that to pursuade my purchase decision. Just curious why you are not happy with yours.

I paid 350$ for a progammer and all I get out of it is adjustable shift points, ability to raise rev limiter (Why would one want do this, I'll never know.), Increase the speed limiter (this is great considering I drive 128 mph all the time now), adjust for different gear ratios and tire sizes (which are all stock for me). I programmed for 91 Octane and noticed no increase in performace, nor an increase in mileage. I should have got a custom reprogram but that was before I knew about them.

No,I haven't reprogrammed the shift points yet,I don't know why,I just haven't done it yet,Maybe I'll toy around with it this weekend.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
