2002 GMC2500 HD

I have a 2002 2500 HD crew cab that has a bad vibration at 40 to about 55 miles per hour. I have had the tires checked by two different locations and both say that they are balanced. The whole truck seems to bounce at these speeds. Any suggestions what this might be?

By the way, I just found out about this site today and have learned alot already. Wow, what w great site.

Is your truck a long or short bed?

If it is a shortbed, then I would take a look at the universals. In '02 I believe the crewcab shortbed went to a 1-piece driveshaft so there shouldn't be any carrier bearings.

If it is a longbed, then I would check the universals and the carrier bearing.

This has the two piece drive shaft. How do you go about checking the bearings and universals?

I have a 2004 2500HD with the 6.0. I have had mine in the shop at least 8 times for a vibration. 2000 to 2800 rpms.

Turns out it was the exhaust. The dealership ended up installing a vibration dampener on the muffler. This knocked out at least 80% of the vibration in the cab and floorboard. At least now I know that it is only the exhaust causing the problems so it is nothing serious. I can change the exhaust out in the future.

Rotate the driveshaft back and forth to see if there is any slop in the universals.

I don't know the best way to check the carrier bearing but I would guess you could grab the driveshaft at the carrier bearing (where it goes through the crossmember) and see if it feels loose.

I had an '01 crewcab shortbed, that had a 2-piece drive shaft. It had a vibration when you would take off from a stop. The dealer cut out the carrier bearing and replaced the driveshaft with a one-piece unit, which cured the problem.

I have similar problem w/ my 2000 2500 4x4 6.0 extend cab short bed.

Vibration starts @ 60mph and get worse as speen increases. Dealer has balanced tires, balanced both drive shafts, turned rotors, ujoints, replaced torque convertor & control valve, replaced front cv joints. Truck has been in shop over 40 days! Now they are looking into rear diff. ? Needless to say, have lost all hope dealer knows what they are doing.
