Dex-cool

My message center told me that "Coolant Low" today, I checked in the plastic tank and it was below the full cold line and so I need to add some coolant but someone tell me if they are using it or adding something else?

Use the Dex-cool. Don't be surprised if you need to fill it more often though. Somewhere on this forum, I had a question about the level. Turns out, the Dex-cool's main ingredient (I can't think of it off hand) evaporates more. ???

Propylene Glycol was the product you were looking for which

has the tendancy to evarporate more rapidly than the green

stuff. Stick with the good stuff.

Thanks guys, I added some today used the Hovline (sp) brand dex-cool. Before I could get some when I was going to get it and I stopped at the parts house the heater core gurgled quite a bit so I spent some time just kicking tires until it cooled and added some to top it off did not drive much coming home so I don't know if the gurgling sound is gone or not.

I checked mine today and it was below the cold line. I went to Wally-World and picked up a jug of the Dex-Cool. Now, I have to wait for it to cool down.

Havoline was the manufacturer for Dex for GM. Believe now others such as Prestone, etc have their own formulas of it.

Yeah, I got the havoline brand but they had the Prestone brand of it too.

Do NOT use regular (non-DexCool) coolant - your seals and fasteners will eventually fail.

I have a friend at work who bought a TransAm, where the previous owner had replaced the DexCool with regular antifreeze - he had to replace pretty much every fitting and seal recently, as they basically all fell apart. We suspect some incompatible chemistry between the two.

Don't forget to add water. My dumba$$ went through a whole gallon of straight dex instead of adding the water mixture.

That's right. A dealer back in '96 advised to use dex straight. After reading the info, it does say to add water. It doesn't work as well without water.

Do not chagne out the dex-cool coolant. The seals in your motor are dependent upon that coolant. I've read a few places that the dex-cool with curdle like mild but I haven't witnessed it yet so I would leave what GM has in it until GM tells you to change it out.

I recently discovered the forums at Chevytalk.com and they have nothing good to say about dex-cool. They all talk about how it ruins the engines and corrodes the radiators. I've never heard anything bad about the orange stuff, but I haven't really researched it before.

What gives? :ehh:
