Moving a Safe

I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 5.3L 3.23 with the G80 and was wondering if i could safely put a 1500lb safe in the bed of the truck to move it about 5 miles. i have a way to get it in on a pallet and i would remove the tailgate to load it because i know that would snap like a twig. if i can than what can i expect suspension wise???

You will defiantly be bottomed out. If you do as mentioned, put it as far fwd as possible, and take it slow it should be ok. If it was me, I would consider renting or borrowing a trailer (that could take the weight!) and pulling it instead of putting it in the bed of the truck. I know 10000% you can pull it. Or rent a Uhaul or Ryder then you don't have to worry about huring your truck.

I loaded up waaaay to much broken concrete in the back of my Toyota (the fake 4x4 one) and hauled it to the dump. From that amount of weight my tailgate would not close correctly, we had to bend the bed back to make the tailgate close correctly. That was with the weight closly dist across the entire bed, a safe would put all that weight in one small area. Just a thought.

Are you kidding me.1500 lbs in a full size pick-up should be no problem.I routinely carry a ton of pellets on a pallet in my silverado. just put it up near the cab and there will be no problem.

Should handle it just fine. But do try to put it as far forward as possible, and strap that thing down the best you can......nothing like having a 1500lb. rocket in the back of your truck :chevy:

As slim said above it will be fine. I also haul 1 ton of pellets in my truck every winter. I slide them all the way to the front and still have about 1-2 inches of travel between the spring rubbers and the axle. Hauls it like a champ. Just a little body sway from the pellets being in a stack about has high as the cab. I usally haul just over 2 ton of pellets to my house in a couple trips. That trip is 30 miles. Truck pulls most of the hills on the way home without shifting also.

It will handle it, the pallet will help distribute the condensed weight. Make sure your tires are aired up and strap down that safe good. Avoid potholes.

A borrowed/rented trailer would be best but you should have no problem.

i think i will go get my trailer out of storage, it is a tandem axle car carrier with a steel deck, it probably needs air in the tires since it hasn't been used in like 2 years since i sold my vette

Fifteen hundred pounds shouldn't be a problem. And, yeah, it's better to load as far to the front as possible and TIE IT SECURELY.

I once loaded the quarters of an Asian water buffalo and the quarters of a yak in my 2003 Silverado Z-71 EC/SB (Yes, we hunted, killed and ate them). The load was similar to yours and the rear springs were just at the "flat" stage. I had to drive about 175 miles home in the snow; the traction and the "ride" was excellent.

My current truck is a 2500HD Duramax/Allison and this load would be a snap.

Please let us know how it turns out.

Yes it would be a snap in a 2500HD w/ the ali but my concern is that i have the 3.23 rear gears

Wow first post {the lurker has awakened}

I have done the exact same thing - {I'm in the safe business.}

With my stock 2002 Sierra 1500 the heaviest safe I've hauled was 1770 lbs.

It didn't bottom out but then again I didn't hit any bumps at speed.

As mentioned: as far forward as possible, then Slooooow and easy.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
