Shipping Anything??? Beware of UPS and their insurance/claims "a real joke"

"Just thought I would warn anyone about UPS and their insurance coverage.

In my instance I packed a 105 lb toolbox in 3/4" Styrofoam and had done that

on 2 previous boxes I sold on e-bay. Anyway, they dropped it, bent 6 out

of the 8 corners and sprung the door. The damage claim denied because of

improper packing... The problem I have is when I dropped it off, I

explained what it was, explained how it was packed, helped them weigh it,

filled out the paperwork, declared the value $450 and they happily took my

money. The claims people work off the facts and don't bend under any

circumstances. Bottom line is beware of them especially if the item is

subject to damage. I really believe after seeing all the rules and

regulations, they have a way out of any claim. I did the right thing by

eating the shipping and refunding the buyer his money. Probably lost about

$400 after damage is fixed. USPS although slightly more does stand behind

damage and will be my only means of shipping. Thanks for reading."

3/4" for 105 lbs? Isn't that a tad skimpy?

Doesn't matter, I'm with you on UPS...I'll pay extra to avoid them on any items that will be damaged by being dropped.

They broke a slide projector I sold on Ebay. They paid the claim. They did not hassle me too much, I think maybe because the manager of the UPS Store I shipped it at, opened my box and inspected my packing job and said it was fine to go out.

She also said that they will usually not hassle too much if the claim is under $100, when it goes beyond that they can get really picky.

Bottom line, their "insurance" is just alot like any other insurance company goal, take in as much money while paying out as little at possible.

I have a different complaint about UPS. They seem to give businesses great rates, but if your are a private citizens, they will try to screw you big time. Case example:

I sold a motorcycle windshield to a guy in California (live in Florida) and mailed it in its original box (not an eBay transaction). It was a fairly large box, but very light, only about 2-3 lbs. The US Post Office wanted $ 20 for ground shipping. I thought I could get a better rate from UPS so I go to their local office and stand in line for 1/2 hour to find out that they want $ 32 to ship the same box by ground. Some savings here! I asked them to at least match the post office rate, and they refused. I said a few choice words, packed up my box, and mailed it from my local US post office for $ 20.

To make the long story short, I burned myself on this deal, as I charged the guy only $ 5 for shipping, mistakenly thinking that a light box would not be that expensive to ship. Boy, was I wrong!

UPS is run by Satan. Right after my wife and I were married, my mother-in-law (who, by the way, is probably one of Satan's closest friends) shipped my wife bouquet to a preservation company. The bouquest never made it--UPS mangled it beyond description.

I live in Ottawa, Ontario and when I purchase items in the US and the seller ships with UPS, I'm gaurenteed to pay twice the amount of it's selling value.

What UPS charges as a 'brokerage fee' to bring it across the boarder, is robbery.

Now, if I'm buying something from the US and the seller will only ship UPS, I don't bother.

Example: purchased a couple of float switches for my fish tank. Switches were $10 US each, order 5. Total $50. Cost me $95 after UPS's brokerage fee.

I shipped a Corvette Z06 cat-back exhaust through them, wrapped in cellophane, and they bent it - They bent TITANIUM exhaust! Then they denied the insurance claim based on the fact that they dont use any warehouse equipment with enough power to bend titanium.

Luckily the buyer was smart enough to take pictures of the destroyed cellophane on arrival and was able to identify the damage from forklift skids.

I agree with you pwall, I to have decided not to buy any US products if they are shipped UPS. Their brokerage fees are over twice as much as anyone else.

I won't buy anything from a business nor eBay seller that uses UPS.

With UPS I've always received the boxes completely filthy with grime and some oily stuff, not to mention a least a corner always crushed in.

USPS first with FedEX a very close second. With either one I receive clean packages without damage. Once with a slightly crushed corner, there was a note attached indicating they were sorry about the damage and that there would be no problems with claims if the contents was damaged/not working.

I'll tell you this much...I'll NEVER get on a skateboard and grab onto the bumper of one of those brown trucks when the driver isn't looking again. No, I wasn't very sharp when I was 10 either.

I had so many scabs after that...Oh man, was I in heaven.

Ha, you lived the dream of the kids in my neighborhood. It was to somehow be undetected and hitch a ride via the UPS truck. My thought was on that nifty little platform bumper they had on the back, but I guess a skateboard could work too.

You get what's called the "speed wobble" when you hit about 20 on a skateboard.

It's impossible to stay on it.

I did a lot of things that other kids only dreamed of when I was a kid.

Trampoline between the house and the pool?

Check

Massive ramp to jump the bicycle into the pond (I was doing backflips before the halfpipe was invented...Just not landing them)?

Check

Old man neighbor that wanted nothing more than to teach the kid down the road how to make things explode out of normal household items?

Check

Broken bones and more than my share of scars?

Check

Can you tell I was a latch-key kid that lived in the boonies?
