Dash Flaking off???

Recommended Posts

Was cleaning my 01 Silverado this weekend (6700 miles on it) when I noticed that a piece of the dash had flaked (peeled) off.

Has anyone else experience this?

I've NEVER had this problem with any of my vehicles.

The only time I've ever seen anything like this happen was the result of neglect to the plastic(not "armor all"ing regularly)

hi. i bought a '01 Z71 and the dash is doing the same thing. evidently the dashes are molded in black plastic and it seems the paint or whatever chevy used is starting peel/lift off. would any one know if there is a recall concering this?

My 2000 started peeling on the ash tray. They replaced it under warranty. It was covered with a plastic film they use to change the interior colors. Dealer should give you no problem about replacing it. I would tell him that you have only used a damp cloth to clean it.

Dang it's just a plastic film over a black molded piece?  Then we need to ask GM why they can't offer some true COLORS in the interior!  Personally, I miss dark blue like in my old 91 K5 Blazer.

Mine has the same problem.  It's a rubbery kinda plastic paint or coating.  On mine, it's bubbling up where the front dash bezel touches the upper dash.  My truck is not under warranty.

Anyone know if it's possible to get this paint anywhere?  I'm guessing it's a satin or flat type paint with a lot of flex additive to give it that rubbery feel.

I'm having the same problem on an '01. It is peeling at the top of the dash pad above the radio AND on the bezel around the radio and vents. I can't understand how this happened, since these are two different materials and even colors. Who PAINTS PLASTIC? :nono: I don't think there is any point in pulling the dash to repaint, since the same thing will inevitably happen again. Does anyone know of a paint that will work to just hit the peeling spots?

Had the same problem on my 2002 silverado. It was on the side of the dash at the door and I noticed the paint was thin then flackin away. They fixed it under warrenty and they subbed it out to a vinyl repair shop.

I have a small spot doing it by the 4 wheel drive switch

My brother has a 2001 with the dark gray interior and his is doing it on the side of the dash where the drivers door closes next to as well as around the radio, AC controls, etc. My 2002 with the light tan interior started doing it in the same place as the picture above but I had that entire bezel replaced under warranty. I now had one little flake missing on top of the dash...TAAAAAAAAhhhooe....do you rest your hand or fingers there while messing with the radio controls?

If your vehicle is out of warranty go by your local dealer and ask the Service Dept if they can recommend a vendor to do the repair. You can ask about the quality and what they normally charge. If you don't like the Dealer, ask the same at one of the better Body Shops in your area. There won't be a "Recall", recalls are for safety related items only.

Bought a new trim on e-bay for my $20 fix

Yep. That's the spot. Plus the top of the actual dash is 10x worse. Looks like it bubbled up and peeled off, revealing a black dash underneath. I know I can take it to a vinyl shop to have it repaired, but it is virtually guaranteed to blister/peel somewhere else down the road. I'd prefer to find a paint & do it myself- at least that way I could hopefully seal any new spots before they became large like the one I have now.
