I Think i blew the crap outta my G80

Well for the second time in just over 20,000 miles i am pretty sure i blew the ever loving crap outta my G80. I AM PISSED, It went the first time around 13,500 miles when i helped a friend out of a ditch. Dealer fixed it no problems, But that was less than 6 months ago and i am going to go in again for the same problem. So here is what happened. all of you in the houston area know how bad it rained today, i mean my god. But around 9 PM tonight i got a call from a client of mine off FM1960 that the electrical storm fried his server. So i head out there and i pull into there parking lot and i get to work. around 10:30 i realized that i cant get it fixed tonight so i told him i would come back in the morning after class and fix it. So i go to pull out of there parking lot and there are no curbs and the whole d**n thing is under water so i cant see a d**n thing. i pulled to far over and went into the dirt axuillary lot and well dirt lot plus 8" of rain in 24 hours equals mud pit. so i start trying to get out and i am almost out, my front wheels are back on pavement and then my passenger rear wheel slips and BAM and then nothing but Passenger tire spin. So i finally make it out. and damnit if i am going to do this again.

Here is the fun part, i cant afford the gear swap and new locker i want so i have to plead with dealer to fix it tommorow so wish me luck.

GOD AM I PISSED

Shouldn't the replaced parts be under their own 3 year 36,000 mile warranty? Starting when it was fixed the first time. This would be regardless of the factory 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper, or the fact that you might be past that.

G80 is the RPO code for the differential.

G80 -- AXLE REAR, LIMITED SLIP (POSITRACTION)

It should still be replaced under the 3y/36k warranty if it is still in play. I have never seen a dealership give more than 12m/12k warranty on replaced parts out of warranty. If you can find one, great.

How does this act? I may have done in mine today also. Mine sounds like a grinding gears trying to engage until I hit 15-20 mph then it seems to go away until I come to a stop again. Any insigh would be helpful oh, by the way its a 99 Silverado, 4wd, extened cab

Thanks

Well I took the truck to the dealer this morning and I have been in a god forsaken rental car all day I WANT MY V8 BACK, Sorry, They called me around 3 and confirmed that i needed a new G80 and that they would fix it under warranty. so i am having them do the slip yoke and the Intermediate shaft at the same time. But it is just frustrating that i havent even had the truck a year yet and the G80 blew twice. Well i guess no good deed goes unpunished.

What is it exactly that is breaking in this diff? Is the ring gear teeth getting stripped or is the LS carrier clutches being stripped?

so is an aftermarket open carrier available for purchase somewhere? Anyone cracked open the rear end and took a look inside? I have rebuilt 12 bolt and 14 bolt axles along with plenty of Dana axles but this newer stuff is a mystery to me.

I assume that I have this G80 LSD carrier as well.

I would say that 15K mile out of a G80 is pretty good, you were lucky. That is about the poorest excuse for a diff as I have ever seen, if you want a locker, you will have to get an open carrier and then put a real locker in and forget about that Eaton piece of junk.

If i recall correctly the governor pin that engages the "locking" action is the item that breaks.

When i do my gear swap early next year i am gonna get an open carrier and put in a lunchbox locker like a powertrax or the likes of.

I have ~45K miles on my '03 truck, which has a G80 locker in it, and I have not had a single problem with it. and that includes going to the drag strip with it....

I should play the lottery more often, I got a 146Kish on mine.
