How Many Problems Have You Had With Your GMT-900?

Anyone have trouble with mildew smell from the AC ?

Yes, I have recently started to have this problem as well. Within the past week my drivers side door hinge has started popping when I close the door, and my gas gauge is becoming very inaccurate. I just hit 37,000 miles so I figure it's about time for a bunch of stuff to start going out since I'm out of warranty.

Other issues that were fixed under warranty, new weather stripping around the doors because water was leaking into the cab, intermediate steering shaft at 35,000 miles, right outer tie rod replaced at 26,000 miles, and a new rack and pinion was put in at 32,000 miles.

Also had the rotors turned and new pads at 34,000, not under warranty of course.

I have owned two NBS GMC 1/2 tons. First one was an 09 SL 4.8 4 speed extra cab 4x4. I liked it except for a warm engine lifter tick. (that's right warm. it never ticked at start up, only when it was warmed up) I did find a dealer (went to 4 dealers) that heard the problem and would fix it, but I didn't like the idea of my new engine being torn apart, so I fixed it in the sales department, they gave me what I paid for it (I bought is used with 400 miles on it) on trade for a 2010 GMC 1500 SLE extra cab 4x4 LONG BOX. (really wanted the long box for my work) This truck now has 4000 miles on it and it has the 5.3 AFM engine w/ 6speed tranny. In 2009 there wasn't a long box on the west coast that has the options I wanted, so that is why I first bought the short box truck.

2009 4.8 Problems:

1: warm lifter tick (very loud)

2: Door seal squeaks (extra cab)

2010 5.3 problems

1: On all long beds, the tailgate straps are too short and the tailgate angles up when open. (fit and finish problem only with long beds, no solution)

2: the side airbags in the seat creates a sharp edge on seat bolster that wears the fabric. My 09 seats didn't have the airbags and didn't show wear here after 1 year, my '10 has wear after 1 month. (same fabric)

3: cold start engine rattle, (but only for a few seconds, I think this is normal and it doesn't bug me)

I love my 2010, and the seat fabric is my only issue with it that bugs me. These are great trucks, but no truck is perfect. Best part about the 2010 is the epa mpg: 15 city 21 hwy!!!!!!! and I have no problem getting that mileage.

My 08 Z71 5.3 CC 2yrs. 55,000 miles (hard miles) 0 issues but it was going to need brakes soon, (towing heavy trailer with weak elec. brakes),

Almost one year and 8500 miles in, I've had a few relatively minor problems:

  • Delivered with 'rail rust' spots
  • Rust spots on chrome back bumper
  • Buzzing rattle on passenger side of dash on cold startup
  • Transmission dipstick doesn't want to stay fully inserted
  • Sliding driveshaft issue makes it feel like you've been rear-ended at stoplights
  • Outside bottom bolster on cloth driver seat is wearing
  • Brakes squeal when cold
  • Squeaking door seals
  • 5.3L AFM V8 has never has gotten gas mileage as good as advertised on original sticker (actual 13 in town, 17 on hwy, avg 15 overall; not 14 city and 20 hwy shown on sticker)
  • DIC instant & avg fuel mileage and gallons used always 20% overoptimistic from actual calculations
  • Rear of truck sits about 1-2 inches lower than when new; nothing heavy ever hauled or towed (?)
  • Right front tire 'feathers' outside tread block (alignment?)
  • Air/tire noise gets in crew cab from vents on back of cab
  • First to second and second to first shifts a little harsh when cold on 6-speed auto transmission with 3.42 gears
  • TPMS sensor on one wheel reads 1-2 psi lower than my accurate tire gauge; other 3 wheels are spot-on

This is my first brand new truck, so I haven't had any new trucks to compare it to, but knock on wood, it seems to be much higher quality than my last new GM product (96 Impala SS service-shop queen with just about more miles on it vertically [on lift] than horizontally)!

My 06 CC 2wd 1500, right at 65k:

Driver side window regulator separated: Warranty repair

EVAP sensor P0449 code: Warranty repair

Left side inner tie rod: Warranty repair

Passenger side wheel hub: Warranty repair

EVAP sensor P0449 code: Repaired

Right side inner tie rod: Repaired

Intermediate steering shaft clunk since 10,000 miles: Fixed repeatedly and given up on

Driver side wheel hub: Repaired

Rear axle pinion seal: Repaired, my fault

Rack and pinion bushings shot: Need to get fixed

Transmission makes tons of noise when in first gear but has never slipped or done anything but shift flawlessly

When I pull up to a stop first thing in the morning I get a clunk like I'm being rear ended from slip yoke/transmission?

Transmission dipstick starting to slip out and doesn't stay all the way closed

Water in driver side taillight

On really cold days, there will be a pushrod or lifter tick for 3-5 seconds, only happened 2 or 3 times

Otherwise been a great truck, and am very happy. GM could design replaceable rack bushings or serviceable hubs, but all things considered, the truck has never let me down. Original battery too! Never had a dead battery and never not started. Love it!

Leaking trans pump-warrenty

Faulty fuel vent solenoid-warrenty

-My drivers seat never has been able to stay fully wrapped around on the front, I tried clipping it in it just pops off, I only wiegh 170lbs so thats not the problem.

-Brake warpage 2 times on factory rotors.

-Oil pan weeping, but not enough for warrenty.

1: On all long beds, the tailgate straps are too short and the tailgate angles up when open. (fit and finish problem only with long beds, no solution)

?

Why would it be different with a long bed truck? The box dimensions (minus the length) are identitcal to the short beds.

2004 Silverado 4x4 ECSB 5.3L 114,000 miles later this is what I've done:

Intermediate Steering Shaft - Removed & lubed - Fixed 1 lube kit and about an hour of my time.

Blower motor resistor - $65.00 and another hour of my time.

Cylinder heads replacement - in process now. $1,600 in parts and many, many, many hours of my time. Parts include new heads, head bolts, gaskets, lifters, spark plugs, wires, & water pump.

Regular Maintenance:

Replaced brake pads and rotors all the way around

3 set of tires. Factory Goodyears were pretty crappy. Made it to 32,000 miles. Replaced with Bridgestone Revo's - went 70K. On the second set of Revo's now.

New Shocks at 105,000

Overall it has been a very good vehicle. But I am upset with the failure of the heads.

I went back to my dealer (he sells both chevy and gmc) and all the long beds had both fit and finish (read large gaps) around the tail lights, and when you lower the tailgate and put say a 10 foot 2x4 resting on the tailgate, it is about 1 1/2 inches in the air at the back of the bed, I think where the bolts for the straps on the bed are drilled too high up in the long beds. All of them I looked at were that way. My 2009 6 1/2' bed was perfect, and had no gaps around the taillights. The tailgate and straps are the same on all, but the bed stampings are a little different. The only solution they could come up with is to have custom cables made at my expense.

Trucks still warm from the factory with that many miles :seeya:

2007 NBS with 57k miles.

The truck has been good as the only 'major' issue I've had is the AFM oil consumption and that just started recently. Other than that a number of small things have really bothered me. Things like;

- Lousy throttle response

- TPMS is a disaster

- Cardboard body panels, thin paint

- Interior lately has started to squeek, squak, and rattle way more often than I would like.

But again...I realize in the grand scheme of things my problems are mostly minor. I'm hoping the dealer will take care of me with this Oil Consumption nonsense. Otherwise I see no reason why this truck wont last me another 5-6 years at the least. Great gas mileage, good power, nice ride, and overall very reliable.

Brakes at 2k miles started shaking. Dealer cut rotors. Started up again at 10k. Replaced with slotted rotors on my dime.

Truck shook since day 1. Out of round tire. Not really GMs fault.

Squeaky Door. Still squeaks.

Door Lock stopped working last week. Actuator I think.

Moisture in Rear tail light.

Thats about it. Gotta get it into the dealer for the last 2 things and to get my seat covers on order. Thinking of trying to make it to spring so I can run these seat cover through the winter.
