I like mine just fine. At 295hp & 305lbs torque, it is all I need.

16-18 city and 21 hwy.

I have the 5.3, but I have driven the 4.8. In my opinion, if you are going for a new truck, get the 5.3. It is a much beefier engine, and you get the same MPG as the smaller engine. The 100,000 mi Warranty will take care of any issues the arrise. Mine is doing well so far. Now, take it from me, a former Jeep owner: A Jeep Wrangler will not give you anything neat 27 MPG. It is a brick on wheels. The design is not made to be very aerodynamic, nor it should be. It is a Jeep. I loved my Jeep, but please don't think you are going to get a good economic car by going with a Jeep. If anything, you will spend more money on fuel and goodies that you will want to add on. Just my .02

I own a 2008 GMC crew cab 4WD with a 4.8, and I also own a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with a 4cyl and a manual 5-speed. The Jeep gets 15 mpg in the city, and 15 mpg on the highway. The new GMC gets 16 in the city and 19-20 on the highway.

The Jeep is fun on a sunny day with the top down, but here in Montana that is like 6 days a year.

Believe me, forget about the Jeep, get a crew cab with the 4.8. The 4.8 is a good engine and has plenty of power for me.

I love my 4.8l. plenty of power and pep...i am sure if i had the 3.73 or 4.10 rear end i would love it even more, but when you find a deal you can't be too picky (the sticker was 25,000 but the window had 18,900 written on it). mileage is 15/16 city, 18 hwy.

can't go wrong. i am a little apprehensive about the 5.3 with the AFM, all the bad vibrations and lifters problems I keep hearing about. and the 6.0 has that rear main seal leak.

I test drove the jeep today, wind noise, no power at all with the manual even! I had a 4.3 manual before and loved it but it was reg cab short box, it was a little hotrod but i need 4x4 and now a crew cab. But back to the jeep, like i said no power wasnt impressed, 6 speed? it was like a 3 speed with 3 overdrive gears 100 rpm apart, ive drove standards and owned them before and ive never stalled so much in my life and my first vehical was a standard, 1st is almost like a 2nd gear, its so stupid. I did a 3 grand launch with the dodge salesman and it just gave a chirp and bogged right out, so im getting a truck for sure!!! With 26mpg CND on the window sticker of the 4.8 and 20mpg CND from the 5.3, i dunno how accurate that is, it sounds like the 5.3 is priddy close in fuel milage and i like low end power i need a new set or rear tires a year so i dunno maybe a 5.3L sle2 with leather? I dont know if you can get a 4.8L sle1 with leather but you can build on online, im gonna try them both and if im unhappy with the 4.8 then whatever the 5.3s gonna get better milage than my 5.7 now but thants alot for your input im new to the forum and ill keep you posted on it and future mods!

Which engine was in the Jeep ? The numbers on the sticker probably aren't that accurate, but the real difference between the two might be a little more.

3.8l 12 valve out of the caravan.... and theres a difference between a canadian gallon and a us gallon

Hmm, that caravan engine in the 5 passenger wrangler ? Yeah, as far as I know it's not known to be a very powerful engine.

As for the difference, both the 20 and 25 numbers were CDN MPGs right? That makes a 5 mpg difference. Now, I don't know if both vehicles get that in real life, but the 5mpg difference might be accurate though. (The 5.3L might do more like 16-17MPG and the Jeep, 21-22).

My 4.8 gets better fuel economy than my 4.0 six in my Jeep. I get about 17.5 average these days in the truck and 15 in the Jeep. The 4.0 Jeep has good power but sucks gas. I think Jeeps of all kinds are stuck on 15 mpg.

My wife loves the Jeep though and drives it everywhere. I drive my company Explorer that gets 21 mpg all week and my truck sits in the garage until weekends when we go in it. It should last forever at this rate.

Looks like a lot of people are still reading this so here's my opinion:

I've got the 4.8 in a silverado with 3.10 gears (I think) and it's a great motor. I have 200,000 miles now and have done lots of heavy towing with the poor thing. The motor has never failed in any way. I think the only thing I've replaced under the hood besides fluids is the battery. I tow trailers around town constantly and it's still going strong.

I also get 20 mpg in town and about 26 on the highway (2wd and manual transmission). Gets about 12mpg with a trailer.

My only complaint about the motor is most of the power is up high so you really have to rev it if you're towing. My gearing isn't meant for towing so that doesn't help.

My 4.8 was a good engine, I just wanted bigger so I swapped it with a 6.0. I do tow and the 4.8 didn't struggle with the horse trailer, but it did with the toy hauler.

All the new engines use the 4 cylinder mess, right? Even the V6, I think.

It's good for what I need it for, but it's not the best gas saver. I get around 15mpg in town with mine.

Don't worry, there are those who get 28 MPG consistently with the cheapest 87 octane gas towing a 5000 lb trailer up Pike's Peak road.

*cough* *bullsh*t* *cough*

I have the 6.2L/6 speed which GM bragged as 26CND MPG. I can get 22 MPG doing 100kph/60mph, with NO WIND, on a flat road. Deviate from that, and you don't have enough torque at low RPM's to hold any speed and not burn fuel. Typically it's getting ~18CND MPG under normal conditions. (a far cry from 26). I only seen 26 once, coming out of Pincher Creek (aka wind zone), coming down the mountains. It was neat to see, yet no where near the norm.....

I highly doubt the 4.8L gets any ware near 26MPG in a full size truck. It's pretty bolt claims that violates physics, since you just don't have the torque at low revs to hold a 5000lb brick at 60MPH.....

I'm sure the 4.8L is a perfectly decent engine for almost everything you'll toss at it (the 5.3L in my past truck was awesome), just don't buy it under the assumption that your 5000 lb truck is going to get you better fuel mileage than most small/mid sized cars.
