Oil Life System

I had my oil changed 2,000 miles ago and the light is already on. I think they just forgot to reset it because 2,000 miles is awful quick to dirty up your oil, even conventional. Has anyone had theirs come on this soon after you know it was reset?

Truck has a work truck package for the most part so I dont know how extensive the oil life monitoring system is. I cannot see how long I have left (not sure what year that started or what models)only comes on when needs changed.

Thanks for your help! :D

When you had the oil changed did you reset the OLM? If not thats the problem. Oil change shops usually dont resett them.

I figure that they forgot so I was just gonna wait till my usual 3,000. I just didnt think that it could be dirty and need changed that quick.....Thanks for the reply

I've never had the OLM indicate in less than 5500 miles. It may be possible under heavy load conditions but I've done a lot of miles in GM trucks and never seen it. I bet they didn't reset it.

The OLM has no idea the actual condition of the oil.

There is an algorithm that the 'puter uses based on a bunch of inputs.

Either the shop didn't reset the light or you maxed out the algorithm in record time.

I don't really trust the OLM system. I had 4600 kms on mine since the last oil change and went to the dealer to have it done. We checked the olm and it said 66% left but the oil was very black so I said I wanted it changed, the service advisor told me I was wasting my money changing the oil too soon and told me to drive until it said less than 30%. I went home and put in a new change of Mobil 1 and feel more secure knowing there is clean oil in there now. No way would I have let the truck go until it said 30% that would be close to 10000 kms on conventional oil not gonna happen in my truck.

Oil color is not an indication of when the oil needs changing. Some oils turn black qiuckly. Heat turns the add pack dark in some oil. And the cleaning ability of of some oils just tells you the oil is doing its job.

It would have to be tested in order to determine whether the oil is good or bad, this thread could easily blow up to something like, "I change it every 2500 miles" or "I dont change it until the light comes on (or message)". If you feel comfortable with it, reset it yourself and then have it changed at your 3000 mile marker. 99.9% of the complaints I used to get was "YOUR Oil life System is saying that I have to change my oil, I did that XXXX miles ago, and YOUR manual says I should get at least XXXXX more miles out of every oil change, not less"....and everytime I would reply to these complaints, I would ask the first question: "DICK, did you take it to a GM dealership or a local shop?" Their response: Jiffy Lube, Chevron, (Insert wherever). "Why does that matter where I took it?"

"DICK, cause the DUMBSHITS dont know how to reset the Oil Life if they dont know about it!"

And what kind of oil filter is on there that can go 10k-15k miles before the reading goes below 30%?

I know it would have to be tested to find out what condition it is, I just wondered if anyone had theirs come on so soon after they know it was reset. I take it to a local garage and they do forget sometimes, which I figure is the case here.

Definately not trying to start a post war on mileage :D

My OLM comes on between 6 to 7 thousand miles. I usually change at 5000. I leave it on to see when it actually would come on and then reset it. I record the mileage just so I will know.

Its cool man, I might have misread it since it was late....it has happened once at my dealership and I let them know about it, since they screwed up, they told me to come back in 3000 miles and they would change the oil for free (they did), and they made sure to reset it in front of me.
