Should We "support" Gm

With all of this plant-closing info coming out, and the layoffs, are we in Big Trouble with owning Full-Size GM products, such as Sierras, Escalades, Tahoes, Silverados, etc???

 

We all know that our gas-guzzlers are no longer in any way popular in today's standards...everything is going Green or going compact. Of course, I understand this trend with $4 per gallon fuel.

 

I talked to my salesman earlier this week, and he told me to specifically watch for HUGE GM rebates for Sierras, Silverados, Tahoes, and Yukons. He said GM is building way too many of these, and customer demand has plummetted for these models.

 

So, my question to you...do WE continue to buy these full-size behemoths, or do we drop them and move on to something else. Pros and Cons of this??

 

I'm gonna do this...I will be watching rebates for Yukons...and if they become acceptable to me to make a move, I'll be driving a 08 Yukon, instead of my 08 Sierra.

 

What are your opinions???

I'll sell my truck and move on to something else just as soon as they make an econobox that seats 5 adults comfortably, has 4wd, tows my boat (properly) and hauls my stuff.

 

Until then, I have no choice but to keep it....oh darn.

I say buy what you want, buy what you need and buy what you can afford. There will always be a need for full-size pickup trucks and vehicles that can carry more than 4 adults comfortably. Don't let the media and political correctness make your decision for you. At some point in time, it may not be used as a daily driver, but I will continue to drive my '04 Z-71 Avalanche and not worry about the perception that it is not the "right" kind of vehicle in today's market. I replaced 3 vehicles with the Avalanche, a '90 Z-71 Extended Cab, a '90 4x4 Suburban and a 2002 Tahoe, so I feel pretty good about that.

As I see it, keeping your truck and getting a small car to use as an everyday driver makes a lot more sense. I will definitely keep mine, but I use it only for hauling, towing and long trips. That way it will last much longer.

GM & Ford changing their product mix away from big stuff is not signaling the end of the world. People who need big trucks and SUV's will still buy them. Expected demand for these products will just be less than over the past few years. It's also important to remember that Congress recently mandated much higher CAFE standards so they will have little choice but to change this mix.

I just love this....a 20 mpg vehicle now defined as a gas-guzzler. My Dad's old Pontiac 455 wagon, now that was a gas-guzzler.

Glad you started this thread. I was wondering the same thing.

 

I'm in the market to replace my Suburban and I would have no problem buying now if there are some better rebates and discounts ahead. I do not use the vehicle as a daily driver but I need one to do what I do. There are no other vehicles that I can use and waiting for a more efficient one to do the same job is hopeless.

 

These people that think we all should bow down and drive some little econobox should have been in Wisconsin this last winter to see how they would get along. It makes me so mad to hear the news media completely trash these vehicles as though everyone should feel guilty if they drive one. And it makes me mad that so many people are so gullible that they believe anything they hear. Those people need to get out in life more.

 

We can thank the greenies and the democrats for getting us into the high gas price situation since they have always said the price of gas in the US should be higher so people would give up their SUVs. We should be using our own energy supplies now and be building more refineries now. Any useful alternative energy power for the vehicles we use and need is too far into the future to be counted on.

 

I say buy if you can afford it. Sure the cost is higher but you can't run it for free and you won't live forever.

 

I'll be supporting GM by buying a new Suburban that will be made in Mexico thanks to our government regulations.

pm26 has a point. People who need trucks need trucks. End of story. However, you dont need it all the time. I have my beater 4 banger yota i commute with. But when I need to go shopping or camping, I have my Sierra. This method isnt for everybody(especially when your commuter looks as bad as mine ) but it works for me. Also, definitely take advantage of the rebates.

Why should we "support" GM or anyone? My self-worth isn't tied up in a stupid truck!

 

I buy the truck I need because I need it to pull a heavy trailer. I don't care if GM makes my next one, or Betty Crocker. As long as it pulls my trailer down the road.

 

If I didn't need to pull a trailer I'd be driving the "greenest" rice-box I could find that would haul my a$$ from one place to the next.

 

(And, yes, I spent 21 years in uniform, so don't wave the "patriot" card in my face.)

In 1979 gas was $1.00 a gallon. I was making $18k a year. 30 years later, gas price has quadrupled. As a percentage of my spendable income, my gas cost is still considerably smaller than it was then. $4.00 gas is not going to chase me out of my truck.

I hate cars and love my truck... If I had the money I would get a new one to help out GM... I think that if there was one way to get our economy back to where it needs to be even with the diversity of parts on GM vehicles made in other counrties which sucks, is to buy GM vehicles... They dont say an American Revlution for nothing.

I plan on driving a truck as long as I am alive. I've loved trucks ever since I was a young kid and my first vehicle was a truck so i've kept driving them since plus i'm a bigger guy (6'4 315) and I like my space! And I deffinatley plan on continuing to support GM.

Started with Grandma's 85 Dodge 600, then got a used 92 Jimmy(S15), then Big Blue- my 99 Silverado, and now Maxine- the 08. I love the comfort of a truck and don't see myself buying anything else. I try to ride the motorcycle when it's reasonable to do so to save a few bucks.
