4.8l To A 5.3

I purchased one of them service manuals from Advanced Auto the other day and I got reading it. Has anyone else looked through one of these manuals. I was looking at the dimensions of the bore/stroke. Does anyone know if the only difference b/w the 4.8 and the 5.3 is the crank? The bores are the exact same but just have a longer stroke. I know for the international Dt motors the only difference b/w the 414, 436, and the 466 was the stroke. If they were the same length and such probably your could switch the 4.8 crank with the 5.3 crank right. I figure that would make a bit of a difference. Anyone else know anything about this?

No way, its not gonna work. stick with your sissy 4.8

Looks like "Joe Littlepenis" just went and bought himself a big bad 3/4 ton and now has to be an A-hole to make himself feel better about himself.

Good luck with that!

Even if it is possible, I don't think it's worth the effort. Get exhaust, an intake and a nice tune and you'll be fine. If you really need something with more power, buy something. It's a great time to buy used trucks.

You are my hero. Really, you are. I wish I was bad ass enough to have a 3/4 ton pickup, but I'm a puss puss, and I can't handle the badass-ness of a 3/4 ton.

I got thinking about it some more, the cams are interchangeable. Firing orders are the same. hmmm...

Not many people are badass for the3/4 ton. Its got more power and its like a semi truck compaired to your 1/2 ton

Oh yes, like a semi. A frame that is 2" higher, an extra 4 bolts on the rear diff cover, an extra 2 leaf springs, and 1.2 extra liters (or maybe 1.8 liters and no spark plugs)

That sounds like a semi, alright. Go get a life, dipshit.

Hell no... He must have the big bad 8.1 by the sounds :D

I think that the more logical decision would be to trade your truck in for a 5.3 and than if you foresaw yourself getting a larger engine after that just going all the way in the half ton world and settling for a vmax or a denali with the 6.2...

Yeah, I didn't plan on acctually doing just got pondering.... Nothing better to do when sitting in the dorm room. Just got wondering if a crank or something went bad how hard it would be to swap out like... My tune should be in this week... EFI live... see how it does... I really just want to get rid of that f****** TM!

Probably got to go warm up that Big 3406 Cat in his semi to come and smoke your ass... lol

Some people need a big truck to make up for size they are lacking other places.

You could make a 5.3L out of a 4.8L but it will not be equal to a 5.3 from the factory. The 4.8,5.3and 6.0 are all essentially the same motors (meaning parts can interchange, firing order, etc), but the heads are better on the 5.3 and 6.0.

4.8 is 3.78 bore and 3.268 stroke

5.3 3.78 3.622

6.0 4.00 3.622

If you want more motor find a good 6.0 in salvage. It will be better than messing with a 4.8. Plus its an aluminum block.

Im slow on the draw....theres been a number of replies since i typed this.

Actually the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 all share the same head castings and architecture... I realize that the 6.0 is aluminum block (along with some 5.3s) but I'd have to check the valve sizes between each engine to see what difference is there. Externally, you have to be really up on them to tell them apart. Many times, casting numbers are the only way. Biggest difference between 4.8 and 5.3 is stroke... and between 5.3 and 6.0 is bore. Pretty smart these new generation engineers. Of course, each would have its own cam profile... and probably valve size variations.
