Trouble Getting Transfer Case To Shift

i have a 05 Silverado 1500HD that has intermittant issues with shifting into 4x4 from 4x2 mode. the 'service 4x4' message comes up on the info display. when the problem first started it wasn't that big of a deal, i could turn the truck off and back on again and i would be able to shift into 4x4, and the service message would go away. lately i can't even do that so with winter coming this poses a bit of a problem!!

 

also it seemed that when i could get it to shift if i set it to the auto 4x4 mode i could shift it to 4x4 and back to auto with no issues but when i went back to 4x2 mode often times i could not get back into 4x4 after driving for a while.

 

there is a gear whine from the transfer case (when in 4 wheel drive only) that has been there since i got the truck at 33000km. but i use 4x4 so little and never had a 4x4 before i didn't think much of it.

just out of curiosity when your trying to put it into 4wd are you in neutral, drive, moving, not moving?

Sound like it's your actuator. My nephew had the same thing happen on his 05 1500 Crew. The bad thing is the stealer will charge you about $600-$800 to fix. Good luck!
