Cam For An 08 5.3

is there a cam out there for an 08 5.3 that will help out but i dont have to get a tune to get it to work right but still do better then the stock cam?

Why don't you want to get a tune. A good tune by its self will liven it up more than a cam without a tune.

It can be tuned for whatever octane you want, you'll just be leaving some power on the table in the process...

Well that's dumb, you can't afford an extra $5 on a 25 gallon fill up but your going to buy $600+ in parts.

Not necessarily. Justin (Blackbear) can tune your truck for 87 octane and you will still see a big improvement.

BUT, for what a cam will cost to buy and change out, you can pay the difference in a lot of tanks of gas. I understand not wanting to pay for 91 or 93 octane, but you realize that assuming your tank is completely empty and you fill your truck up to the max, you will only pay about $6.00 a tank more for 93 octane vs 87 octane. That's IF you put 25 gallons of gas in it. So it is really not that much more expensive.

So if it were me (and I know it's not) I would get a tune first. Even if its an 87 octane tune. You will be amazed at the performance difference. Then if you still want more later on, buy a cam and Justin will re-tune for free. Any cam you get, to see the true performance of it, you NEED a tune.

If it is a "better" cam than stock, I'm sure your mpg will go down slightly to gain the performance. What about afm? Is it still going to work properly, or will you disable it completely? One other thought, what about your warranty? If you replace the cam with non oem cam I'd think your warranty on the P-train would be gone.

Do the tune and you'll be happier. My $.02 worth.

Installing a larger cam without the supporting mods is not worth the time and effort IMO. A cammed truck not tuned right could be slower than a stock truck due to wrong fueling and timing. It can also hurt the motor.

A tune is #1 paramount after a cam swap. You also want supporting mods like an intake, exhaust and headers. You will not truely gain the benefits of holding the valve open longer without them. Also consider the stock torque converter will not work too well with a larger cam. IMO anything over 215* @ .050" you should go with a larger 2800 stall converter for max performance.

Get a custom tune performed first. Then go from there. If you still want more power then add a cam. Then most tuners will retune for free.

Ran 15.0's and occasional 14.9's @ 90mph on a Wait4Me tune only

Ran 14.70's @ 93 after cam swap

Run 14.40's @ 96 with new Zippy tune

With my new stickies & electric fans, and good air I think it can hit 14.2's.
