I just got my new camera in the mail yesterday afternoon.

I had been wanting to get a Nikon D300 ever since my neighbor showed me the results from his. My old DSLR is a Nikon D50 which is about 4 yrs old now (a lifetime in digital camera yrs). Wow! what a difference. Better color saturation is the first and most obvious difference to anyone looking at the pictures.

This picture is last night after sunset and pretty dark out. Still it captured the colors very well.

Did you do any PP to that picture, or is that straight off the camera?

(To be completely honest it looks a tad over-contrasted to me, the shadows are "blown out" or whatever the dark version of "blown out" is ).

Oh and how could I forget, congrats, even if it is a Nikon.

Congrats on the new Nikon! The D300 is a really wonderful camera. I know I really love mine. Though I haven't had too many chances recently to use it.

Just canceled 1 order on a Nikon being that ritz camera filed and owes Nikon money, so I ordered from another site and hopefully will have it this weekend. I'll put the wife to be to work on our vacation trip in a couple weeks.

Dan,

I simply darkened the picture in Photoshop because it looked like high noon on an overcast day (all cameras seek that neutral gray standard). I didn't wnat to play with anything else that would misrepresent what it captured. There was plenty of detail in the shadows, so much that you could even read the black raised tire lettering on the front tires. I just pushed it down to what I remembered the lighting level was. They call them other types "canons" because the thing on the front of their cameras are like a can with a hole in the middle. :D Ah heck, canons aren't that bad. Some of my best friends have canons...even a distant brother.

Anyone used the DxO Optics Pro to correct optical distortion and some light editting?

Never have, never even heard of it. I just have an old copy of PS7 that someone... "lent" me that does everything I need except convert RAW files.

Dan,

Here's the untouched file. 'didn't want to be misleading. Even the untouched pic shows detail I didn't see standing there. BTW, this was handheld at ISO 400.

Nah, I'd feel like I was doing something wrong 'borrowing' a program that's less than 7 years old.

And I know people... :flag:

Seems to be a hot item with the shutter crowd. It's reviewed pretty thoroughly in the latest copy of Shutterbug magazine. Check out their website and they have a free time limited download. I downloaded it at home this morning but haven't had time to play with it. It's lens/body specific so you benefit most if you have listed combinations. Updates of the supported combinations are ongoing and free. I see some real utility with my "vacation" lens (18-200) straightening things out from the distortion. Also, another super wide angle lens I have is listed.
