Rear Defogger

Just bought a new truck. I had noticed that is another cost cutting attempt GM no longer makes the rear window defogger standard. My question is can you add it to a truck that did not come with it from the factory without a lot of work? I already have the heated mirrors so I know the relay is there for that. I had it on my 07 and liked it. Not a big deal but I am curious!

Good question. I assume all the wiring should be there. You would need the glass with the wire elements on it.

I don't have the rear defroster either since I have the power sliding rear window, but I don't see why you would NEED it. My back window never fogs up w/o it

It is good to have if your truck stays out in the cold. I have never used mine for fogging up.

It gets plenty cold here in WI and I've yet to have an issue.

I added rear window defrost to a car. In my case this was an older car with a hatchback. I was able to get the same color hatchback with the defrost lines and wiring in it. Then all I needed to do was look at a factory wiring diagram and see where the relay went (wiring was already there in my case), install the relay (from wrecking yard), and switch out the hatchback door. Also install the factory switch - wiring already there.

 

But what you would need to do is go to an auto glass company and get the rear window replaced. Then run wires and connect that to your existing defrost system. Some wiring may or may not be there. (The only way I could tell would be with a factory wiring manual which would include harness and connector information.)

 

I suppose you could have a dealer connect it for you with the proper harness, etc. Then this would be sure to work like it should. If someone "just wires it in to anywhere", then you can have problems with fuses blowing, etc.

 

Basically if you connect it "the factory way", it should work without problems (because they have already figured out the correct wire sizes, amperage, fuse sizes, etc.).

 

So far as how much work to run the wires... A roll of the dice! Could be real easy or a royal pain.

Theres a universal kit that is sold, seems few and far between for these. Heard it had issues thou.

Yup...I'm in the same boat. Anyone know if you can have the dealer install a factory rear defroster with out too much hassle and $? I have heated mirrors but no rear defrost.

Are you serious? Even the LTZ trim does not contain the rear defrost as standard equipment?
