Is Installing A Trans Shift Reprogramming Kit Advisable....

Hello,

I just purchased a 2002 Suburban K2500 with the 8.1 and 3.73 gears. It has 74,000 miles and appears to be in very good mechanical condition. Of relevance to the question, the transmission appears to work fine and has nice healthy looking and smelling tranny fluid in it.

I plan on using this primarily to tow a 7,500 lb camper around and am interested in mods / upgrades to improve durability and performance toward this end.

So, I am wondering if installin a shift reprogramming kit like the Trans-go HD is advisable given the miles and nature of this electronically controlled transmission? Would there be any risks or downsides to installing such a kit? Would there be any real-world advantages?

Any other thoughts you experts may have insofar as drivetrain upgrades would be welcomed!

Thanks,

My advice. Contact Justin with Blackbear Performance. He can adjust your line pressure, shift points and free up some more power.

I don't see any disadvantages, even with an older transmission to firming up the shifts. Done correctly is should only increase transmission life.

Thanks for the heads up! A custom tune is definitely in order, I believe.

Talked with a tech at trans go, and he said it would help durability in the long run and compliment a custom tune well.

I like my Transgo HD-2 kit, go for the middle or smaller drill size when installing it, the larger is too stiff.
