Drive Train Fluid Change

Hey all. I just tripped 50K on my truck. Its time for me to change the transmission & transfer case fluids as well as the front differential and engine oil. The rear diff. was done less than 2K ago. I know my truck take Dexron III for the trans. and transfer case (manual TC) but I can't seem to find a quantity of fluid for either. I was also know the front diff. takes 80w-90 gear oil. But can I go with a 75w-90 synthetic in the front diff. I was planning on running Royal Purple in both diffs. and either Royal Purple or Mobile Dexron VI in the transmission & TC, but if I can't change out the front to 75w-90, I guess I'll run Mobilube HD Plus 80w-90. Unless someone has a better option.

If anyone could help me out on the fluid quantities and if some one knows if I can run 75w-90 synthetic in the front diff. I'd appreciate it.

You can run 75w-90 in the front diff no problem. The front will take 2qts. The transfer case will take 2qts and the transmission will take 5qts. Running Dexron VI in the transfer case I'm not 100% sure about if it is another brand other than AMSOIL's ATF. I know that Dexron VI is reverse compatible for older transmissions but I have not seen it listed anywhere that it is for a gear box application such as a transfer case. AMSOIL's will work in both but not sure if Royal Purples would work. You would have to contact them for that application.

I know on my 02's front diff you filled it till it ran out the fill hole which worked out to be 3.6 pints, but for your year model it is showing that you are supposed to fill to no higher than .62" from bottom of the fill hole for 8.25 ring gear and 1/4" form the fill hole with a 9.25 ring gear.

careful with t-case. GM is anal about their specific fluid use in it.

for motor, best is Amsoil. I tried RP, but Amsoil beats it easy. I have done 2 15 000 oil changes and am headed into 17 000. for what it is, it is warranted for 25K.

do use synth Amsoil in rear diff and front diff.

I experimented with expensive ATFs and somehow feel that it is waste of $$ for this truck. I can't explain. maybe the way it shifts, or something. just feels like it wants thicker ATF, and synth lubes that are not. shifts very smoothly on cold ATF, but when it warms up, it starts kicking. see what I mean - more viscous feels to serve better.

i have pan and filter job coming next weekend, i'll pour regular DIII in, will see what happens.

I just put Mobil 1 75w90 in mine today.

I have used this in every GM 4wd I have had for the last 15 years with no issues.

X2, Mobil-1 all the way!

Not a big fan of Amsoil, I have had way to many consumption issues for it to be just a freak thing! :dunno:

No one makes an alternative to GM Auto Trac II transfer case fluid. Amsoil was working on reverse engineering it back in 2005 but determined the demand was just not there for a TC fluid. It is not ATF but a special lube. The difference may not be so much as what type BUT what chemicals the lube is made of. Wrong lube could have chemical reaction with interior components of the TC. That's often the reason why a special lube is required.

NBS styles from 2007 up can use Dexron VI in the transfer case.

I like Mobil 1 as well but I would change every 25K. I'm still getting a decent amount of filings in the front diff.

Thanks for the info all.

My transfer case takes Dexron III according to my owners manual. I do not have the Automatic Transfer Case. The manual lists GM Auto Trac II Fluid for the automatic transfer case and Dexron III for the manual transfer case.

I've been using Mobile 1 oil since I got the truck and ran all Mobile 1 fluids in my '03 Impala Just figured I give Royal Purple a try after hearing so many good things about it.
