Disposal Of Old Stock Shocks..

Recommended Posts

I'm about to go out and install my new KYB Monomax shocks and want to know how I'm suppose to disposal of the old stock shocks. When I was researching shocks I saw a bit in Bilstein shocks catalgo and it involved drilling the shock tubes in different locations depending on what model Bilstein shock it was to allow the gas pressure out and to drain the oil into a drain pain for disposal. Any one know of anything like this on the stock shocks?

If your city has a recycling center you could see if they take them, that, or make lamps out 'em.

Most of the time the gas-charge is already popped and the oil is running down the outside. Usually just scrap them with the rest of the metal.

Dig a deep hole in the ground, and throw them em  . If you contact any place that installs shocks, they should be able to tell you how to properly dispose of them.

I just threw mine in the trash, of course I also just dump my used motor oil on the ground too.

This is the way I do it. I have a friend open the trash can then I toss them in there and he will close the lid.

Technical information on disposal of old and defective gas-charged pressurized shocks and struts

FOR SAFETY REASONS, ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND PROTECTIVE GLOVES.

1. Place shock absorber in a horizontal position in a vice.

2. Make sure the shock absorber is secure and cannot move during the drilling operation.

...

5. Drill a 1/16" hole in the reserve tube (a1), 1" from the lower body end. It is quite possible that the gas pressure may force oil out of the hole while drilling and therefore precautions should be taken to restrict the flow by placing a cloth around the area.

6. After the gas pressure is released, drill a 1/4" hole at (a1), 1/2" deep.

7. Compress the shock absorber by minimum 1".

Etc...

The whole shebang...

I put KYBs on a couple cars in the past, including all the way around my wife's current Infinity a yr or so ago. They are great for good damping. But the hardware, boots, bumpers etc. were lacking. I had to go to the dealer to buy the boots and bumpers. I would have thought all the necessary parts that usually need replacing would be included. BTW, the bumpers (stops) slide down the shock strut shaft on that car.

I really do hope you're not pouring your used oil into the ground, that's just f***** up. How hard is it to save it in a bucket and dispose of it properly?
