this was a fairly easy install. i ordered it from adcmobile.com for $1000 plus shipping. it was litterally plug-n-play! the unit comes with adapters for everything, and now i know i can easily add a reverse camera without a problem, just plug in a yellow video cable, and plug the reverse, parking brake, power, and ignition wires on the adapter to the proper location. the factory XM Receiver is still used which was a big plus for me, didn't even have to swap out the radio ID! i mounted the GPS antenna under the front dash panel right under the windshield. just had to take both a-pillars off, and that panel pops off. the GPS antenna is magnetic so i mounted it on the firewall just below that dash panel. it shows full bars on the nav screen so there shouldn't be any problem with it.

 

i didn't bother writing a how-to, there are plenty of them on the internet. the one i used had some pictures of how to take the front dash panel off, but i for the life of me cannot find it! so if any of you know what i'm talking about, please post the link in this thread!

 

i absolutely LOVE this unit! much better than the stock radio, and IMHO much better than the factory nav unit. the map is updated via SD card, underneath the little MAP cover; and the best part is the map updates are FREE! no $200 disk needed. another plus is the audio EQ adjustments, you can really fine tune the sound, and the factory speakers sound 100x better now! i almost spent $300 on some 4-way speakers, but now i don't think i need them anymore! the system also comes with built in Parrot bluetooth, i wired the external mic up my a-pillar as seen in my pics below. people, i have talked to on it say they can hear me perfectly with it. lastly, it comes with a USB/aux input port which i used 2-sided 3M tape to mount on the lower center dash panel. i could have bought the optional iPod adapter, but the unit will play the songs via bluetooth, and i'll bet it will work on the usb port also. but i never use my iPhone as an iPod so i didn't bother getting the iPod cable for the unit.

 

the only problem i've found with it is the steering wheel controls do not change my preset stations anymore; on XM it just cycles through, and on AM/FM it seeks the next radio station. also, it takes about 5 seconds for it to turn on after i turn the truck on, then it takes an additional 5 seconds for the actual intro screen to go away and the radio to start playing. other than that, i have not found one other flaw with it.

Dang, that is pretty sweet!

 

A few question if you dont mind:

 

1. Did they tell you how much more the ipod adapter would be?

 

2. For the Bluetooth, I assume that since it is parrot it will sync contacts with the paired phone?

 

3. Do the steering wheel controls work with the bluetooth like the oem setup?

 

4. For the steering wheel controls not changing your presets, is there any kind of configuration screen in the units setup that might let you change that?

 

5. I assume there was no wires to cut. So adding an aftermarket amp and speakers would pretty much the same process with this as the OEM head unit?

 

6. For the reverse camera, did you have a specific one in mind?

 

I am really thinking about this thing. Ashame it cant use the oem mic from Onstar but not the end of the world I guess.

1. the video ipod adapter is $35, they said it allows you to play videos that are on the ipod... but you can hook your apple white ipod cable into the usb and play songs that way as well.

 

2. when i click the contacts button in the phone menu, it shows all my contacts on the phone, so yes.

 

3. since mine is a non-bose system, the steering wheel controls control the onstar phone, not the bluetooth. this might be different with Bose equipped vehicles that have factory equipped bluetooth.

 

4. there isn't that i know of. i contacted Advent to see if they can answer this one, i also requested that they make that an option in the next firmware update.

 

5. the unit came with an extra adapter i didn't need to use which are labelled Front/Rear Left/Right audio output, SUB output, Rear Monitor Left/Right output. 7 RCA output connections total on that adapter. hope that answers it for ya

 

6. i'm going to get the GM Accessory reverse camera that is meant for vehicles with factory navigation. it should be plug-n-play. i believe it is part number 20906135 which includes the camera, tailgate handle bezel, and wiring to the radio. i'll be asking the guys at adcmobile.com before ordering it just to make sure this will work, they were really helpful and have installed a lot of these kits. if you pull the trigger on one of these, might be helpful to ask them when you order.

I have also requested that they add a way to change presets with the steering wheel.

 

When you install your back up camera let me know how it goes, I added the Advent camera but I like the look of the factory better.

 

Have you installed the latest firmware? And does the dash lights stay on when you cut the truck off and don’t take the key out?

Bummer about the steering wheel not controlling BT but oh well. I doubt it would make a difference if one has bose because I non-bose and change out my onstar module to one with BT and the SW controls worked without a problem.

 

Ouch, that OEM camera aint cheap is it. Worth it I suppose for the factory look.

 

Woh! It has RCA outs? Thats awesome. Might have to give this thing a try.

But with the optional ipod cable I can control it at the HU? I have the PAC Audio ipod interface now which works great with the OEM HU and steering wheel controls. It piggy backs on the XM input so I assume I could still use that but am wondering if the HU would still display artist and track titles that way.

Extremely interested in purchasing one of these units. I just got a factory OEM Nav system since I didn't like my aftermarket Nav system. Now that I see your post the fit is just perfect and integrates perfectly with all factory equipment w/out adapters. Have time to return OEM one so all help is appreciated :jester: Couple of questions....

 

 

  1. Does the Parrot mic have to be installed if you have factory BT? Does it integrate with the Onstar microphone?
  2. Is the unit itself very snappy? Anyone install it w/ Bose system? Any problems?
  3. How is the accuracy of the Nav system? I don't expect Garmin like quality...but I don't want to get completely lost lol

Any other suggestions or reviews to make the jump from factory OEM Nav to this one will be helpful!

Very nice! Keep us updated with quality, and how you like it. I've seen this available through some of our suppliers but haven't actually seen one installed. Looks way better than the pics I've seen!

Alot of the OEM speakers in modern cars are being made alot better than in the late 90s early 00s.(Vehicles in general) For the casual listener just replacing the radio and dialing it in a bit can really make a difference in the way OEM speakers sound.(As you have found out!)

 

Maybe I missed it but are there any sort of RCA outputs on the back of the radio?(EDIT: Nevermind, you answered it in #4 lol)

I used the usb cable that came with it and tied it into the factory cable under the cup holders. The head unit operated the IPOD just fine except no video. I then got the optional IPOD cable so i could play video.

 

I got the Jensen Jlink usb.

      When I had a Bumper subscription for a few days when I needed to run title histories on cars I was looking at, I decided to look up a few of my old/past vehicles.   My 2015 Silverado was still actively registered and it last sold in 2024 with 160k on the clock. No idea if that's on the original engine but someone's keeping it on the road or the original AFM stuff is still going.   It used 0w20. I remember feeding it Mobil 0w20 AFE for the first 30k of its life on <5k OCI's.     Edit: Just did a nationwide search on Autotrader for 2015-2025 Silverados with 5.3's and sorted by highest mileage first.   357k 352k 292k 291k 290k 277k 271k 268k 266k 259k 256k   High mileage on a modern 5.3 doesn't seem all that uncommon, but that's just searching mostly dealer ads on Autotrader. FB Marketplace has all kinds of high mileage 5.3's going back to 2007

      I can't say I have ever heard of someone getting that type of mileage out of a set of tires even though they rotated on a regular basis but without a doubt if the front end gets wear and those tires are no longer able to track straight it scrubs them off, and driving style and road surface make a huge difference as well.    However that is not what prompted me to comment as it was the new tire theme of sitting in storage waiting to be used scenario. I am sure some tires can last for quite a while in storage if its not too warm and out of the sunlight but unfortunately some tires the way they their rubber compound is formulated they can age and dry out even in a reasonably decent storage location. My brother ran into this maybe three years ago when he was looking at the tires that were on his dually truck and a combination of wear on the rear ones and noticing that the front tires had some cracks around the sidewall of the tire not far from the bead but he had replaced only the front ones not long ago with 2 of the remaining 6 he had left from the initial two sets of takeoffs he had all bought at the same time .... 10 years ago ! ( the years fly by, a truck that only gets used a bit to haul a camper during the summer and sits in a shed for a large part of the year ). That second set of 6 tires, two he had put on the front prior like I said and they had very little wear but those cracks were now present. So we go into the shed where the other 4 tires had been stored all this time and every one of them had the same cracks in the sidewalls and so in the end it amounted to throwing away 6 brand new but 10 year old takeoff tires into the dump that he got a deal on at a tire shop because they aged out. They were a Ford factory equipment BFG tire and those tires did not age well compared to some tires I've seen far older then that and did not show that type of aging. True, they always say up here anyway that 7 years is sort of a limit for age by rights, we don't have the intense prolonged heat that many of you have down in the states that just cook tires and depends on where the vehicle sits when not in use. GB, another words maybe had you bought a set of tires to store it would have been fine as long as you used them up fast enough but there are no guarantees when it comes to rubber, tires or of that other type stored in some guys wallets 😆

      Open Door Chimes When Key is Out

      2020 2500 HD...I had some trouble getting the key into the ignition switch but went in fine after applying some extra effort. Since then, the door chimes when open when the key is out of the ignition. Also, when I lock the doors with the switch on the arm rest, the driver door locks but then unlocks. (I can lock everything fine with the fob) The message on the little screen displays the "Engine Hours"...kinda weird.   I'm guessing something happened to the ignition switch and it thinks the key is still in there. I unplugged the batteries for 20 minutes, no change. There are a number of videos on YouTube but nothing I can find that address this specific issue. Ideas appreciated, thank you.

      Based on what I can tell, yes.   As for updating it, its a mixed bag.  Updates do fix a lot of issues, but occasionally can create some oddities.  They do more good than harm though overall.     Here's what the most current one does and a  V171 Improvements Important: Improvements will vary by model, build configuration, system, and sales region. Not all vehicles have all features. OnStar and Wi-Fi may not work after remote start CarPlay may not automatically reconnect Part of the Driver Attention messaging screen may be in English even though the language is set to something else XM may not work After a dead 12V the radio may set to Arabic at each startup Bluetooth contacts might not be able to sync with the vehicle During an OTA the 12V battery may drain Customer might see a screen telling them to return to the dealer After changing the Wi-Fi SSID or password a device may not disconnect If a device is connected on the 2.4Ghz band, nothing will connect to the 5Ghz one, which could show as slow Wi-Fi speeds Customers might have noticed Wi-Fi dropping in certain areas and reconnecting later Customer might see the top of the screen blinking during Android Auto Android Auto may not connect CarPlay audio might momentarily cut out The "Add Phone" button may be grayed out The radio may not start up   V167 Most Notable Improvements:   Outside Air Temperature is incorrect. -You may see a popup message for Engine Shift.
