Advent Oem-style Navigation Installed!

Can almost guarantee you didn't hook up the XM audio RCA leads on the Advent harness. It comes with two harnesses that need to be plugged together - they're both labeled "XM" - one's two male RCA's and one's two female RCA's - plug 'em together and XM audio will result!

Dang Walt, you nailed it. It didnt even register in my mind that I needed to do that when installing the ogm1 (all three times ). Appreciate you pointing that it, worked like a charm.

Thanks

Check out the hidden menu on the 2nd setup page…..

2nd setup page hold you finger on the screen under the settings until it goes into the menu.

Don’t know what all this does but see what you think.

Wow, look at that, thanks for pointing that out Smooney, that is really cool...

This is my first post so hopefully I don't mess up too badly. First, I can't help but be impressed with all of the information everyone contributes. There are some great resources here for sure. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us newbies. I have read this and the other threads regarding the OGM1 and I have a few questions still.

1) Has anyone been successful in using the GM factory mic that is mounted in the headliner instead of the one that comes with the OGM1? If not, has anyone tried mounting the OGM1 external mic in that same factory location? If I have to use it I am hoping to mount it under the headliner, behind the factory mic grille so it looks factory installed.

2) I would like to mount the GPS antenna inside the truck and I am thinking the best spot would be on the dash at the base of the windshield, right in front of the light sensor. I read a post where it was mounted to the firewall under the dash panel but I would think I would experience issues with weak signals at times. Anyone have a "stealth" interior location that has been successful?

3) This is one of those "why does he want to do that" questions, but I would like to retain the factory USB connector in the console, but still be able to use the USB/Audio Media link port as well. Is it possible to "Y" both together at the head unit so they are both available? I do not always have the IPod with me and I found these low profile (Verbatim Store-n-stay) 16 GB USB thumb drives that work great in the factory console location. They are extremely low profile and don't get knocked out of the USB port when things in the console get shuffled around.

4) Last one. I have the factory backup camera option. Is it easy to locate the rear view mirror's video cable inside the radio cavity? Can it be "Y" cabled so the camera feeds the mirror and OGM1 at the same time? I like the mirror location when I am using the mirror for backup anyways. I suppose I could buy a separate license plate camera (with the distance guides) to use with the OGM1.

Sorry for the long post but I appreciate help with the final planning of my install.

Sorry I'm a little late with the answers - I was in San Diego doing onboard videos for Unlimited hydroplanes (check out www.h1unlimited.com when you have a chance :- )

As far as I know, the factory mic is not compatible with the Advent, but we haven't tried it yet to see whether or not it "can" work. The Advent (actually, Parrot mic) really is pretty small, and we haven't had anyone even find it until we point it out to them. We install it forward of the mirror, so it's really pretty unobtrusive.

Put the GPS antenna in the factory spot - pull up the trim over the right side defroster vent and you'll see a tray to the left of the vent. That's where the factory one goes and it works great. It's invisible...

I guess you theoretically "could" do something along the lines of splitting the USB, but we put the pod for the USB/AUX in the center box anyway, and it's even more stealth than the factory plug because it mounts vertically to the front of the glovebox. If you wanted it more factory than the Advent pod, I would vote for extending the Advent inputs to a flush mount USB/AUX input.

The factory camera xan definitely be used with e Advent. Easiest way to do it is to take an RCA cable, cut the end off one end and wire it to the factory positive and negative camera wires in the driver's "A" pillar, then run the other end to the deck and plug it in. No "Y" cables necessary.

Thanks for the advice Walt. Great news on the GPS antenna - I was hoping for an invisible install and this will certainly accomplish that. I am completely jealous on the hydroplane gig. I work in the marine industry and

spend lots of time around some very cool boats, but those machines are definetly in an elite league of their own.

Thanks again.

One more question; Has anyone added rear seat radio controls to their 1500 Crew Cab? We have that option in my wife's Acadia and we use it often. It was not an option on my truck but there is a small compartment in the back of the center console where it looks like it would fit. It seems like it would consist of the display/control unit and a wiring harness to get to the radio. Since the OGM1 seems to support rear controls I am thinking it might be able to be added.

It would almost be easier to get a new truck with rear seat controls than to retrofit yours. There's more than just audio controls there: heater/AC controls along with LAN data, so not only would you need new harnesses/modules, you'd need to re-program the truck to accept the changes to make it work (and you'd have to know the codes of the affected options to be able to reprogram).

I'm not certain, but my guess is it's HIGHLY unlikely it could be done...

I knew it seemed too easy, but you never know until you ask. The video you posted yesterday on the complete OGM1 install was all the encouragement I needed to tackle the install. Thanks from all of us non-installers for the great advice and support you so-willing give. It is sincerely appreciated. Now if you ever need help with some marine electronics, look me up. I would be happy to repay the favor.

I also wanted to ask, what video camera did you use to make the video yesterday? The quality and sound are great. We are planning to create video install guides for some of our products and I would like to have the quality of the OGM1 install video.

I hope I am not hi-jacking here...

I did a little digging around a while ago and found an great deal on the Samsung HMX-H200 - I believe I paid about $240 on Amazon for the camera with a 16GB SD card included! It's an amazing little camera and all that I need to do demo videos. GoPros do my fun stuff...

I am very interested in this head unit. Anybody know if you can add steering wheel controls? Or would it not be worth it? My truck is a bare bones "work truck" package and only has cruise control functions on the wheel. I am coming from Garmin Nav (nuvi portable) and have read the advent nav is not as good...any other feed back on this?

What year do you have? Mine didnt come with the audio controls either, just cruse. Bought a Steering wheel off ebay that had it and pop it on. Wiring was already there so it was pretty easy. I have an 09 LT but I assume that if you have the NBS and cruse yours situation should be the same. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Most likely that's true. I have an '09 LS work truck and added the steering wheel and everything works great.

There's a lengthy thread that has everything you need to know here:

i installed the steering wheel controls literally 2 days before installing the Advent nav unit. they work together flawlessly. my only complaint is it doesn't change the XM preset channels, it just goes to the next station. however on AM/FM the steering wheel buttons seek through the preset channels!

Posted

Well, I wont be missing that feature as I let my XM subscription run out. Not to say I wont subscribe again but I wouldnt have even known the difference because of my lack of steering wheel controls in the first place.

One thing I am curious about is resolution/picture quality? Any info on this?
