Advent Oem-style Navigation Installed!

Just thought I would give back a little for any of those interested in a rear-view camera install. I finally get my replacement head unit for the first one I got which was a dud. ADC is great and are really a nice bunch of guys but I think they still have a lot to learn about dealing with internet sales. Should not have taken 2 weeks to get me out a replacement and I had to really get on them to keep it that quick. Not saying I wouldnt buy from them again, I definitly would, but if you have to do any type of exchange, stay on top of them!

Anyway, attached are some pics. I ended up getting a kit from this guy:

He also sells on ebay. Was a little nervious buying from an "ebay" seller but I figured how much different could it be from any other aftermarket shop. Also, he claimed that it is a higher res lens being that it is CCD and not CMOS. One key thing is that I can see my bumper through it which helps when judging distances. Also, it has a quick release cable at the tail so if you need to take of the tailgate. He was very quick to respond and me his cell in his email in case I had any trouble.

The camera when it fairly easily. I ran all of the wiring to the dash. Made a hole for them in one of the plastic wire blanks so I didnt have to drill into steel under the cabin. I also ran the part that is under the bed through AC conduit so it is well protected. Had to find a reverse source for the 12 V(+) in the dash since the green/white wire on the OGM1 is NOT an output, it is for input. But once I did that, the rest was easy.

has that reverse camera held up for you alright since you installed it?

So far so good. No problems with it. It has been rain on plenty of times and works just fine other then the lens getting water on it making it hard to see.

I finally got a chance to test it at night since the days are so long this time of year and I have new born at home who doesnt let us out much. Works really well, I was surprised I was be able to see as well as I could. One side affect of the truck is that at night the reverse lights automatically come on when you turn the truck off so the radio automatically switches to camera mode to see what is behind. nice little safety features (especially here in NJ :0).

my only concern with ordering the one with distance marks, is the advent screen blocks the "STOP" sign partially with the "check mirrors" message. have you figured out if you can move/remove that or the vehicle on the side of the screen?

As far as I can cell there is no way to turn that thing off. I have no idea why it is there myself, seems kind of stupid to obstruct part of the view when the whole point is to have the view in the first place.

Not sure about the wireless. I went with the hard wire figuring it was the more reliable option but after doing it I wouldnt have mind skipping having to run the wires through the truck. I had to gut the interior anyway for the stereo upgrades so it wasnt that bad but still somewhat of a PITA.

I suppose with any wireless video there could be problems with interference and overall quality. Might be worth emailing the guy who sells them to see what he says.

i agree, for the price they are selling it for, i think your going to have less chance of a problem with the wired set up.

No, not in this case. Since it is not factory, the OGM1 is not that "intelligent" I guess you could say. You can use the nave while moving.

Will the DVD player function on the main screen while the vehicle is in motion? If not, is there a work around?

The unit does see that the vehicle is not in Park via the CAN system. There is a way to Bypass it for "Testing Purposes". It's not that it's not that intellegent it just needs to be set to the testing mode. If you contact ADC I am sure they could help you with this. But as always I warn people if you get in an accident or even get stopped if the cops see it playing in most states it's a serious ticket.

I don't bypass the brake overide in my shop because then I am liable. Someone asks for it, then hits a car, then sues me for doing it. Nope, not gonna happen on my watch

Check out the hidden menu on the 2nd setup page…..

2nd setup page hold you finger on the screen under the settings until it goes into the menu.

Don’t know what all this does but see what you think.

On a completely unrelated subject, does anyone know why I wouldnt get Audio from XM? I have a free 2 week subscription that I got a notice about in the mail. Figured I would check it out but do not get any audio. I do get the station information and and navigate through them just fine. The artists and song title come up as well. I do get the chimes and all other sources work just fine including Onstar.

I called XM just to make sure it wasnt something with the signal and they said if I can see the stations I should have audio.

Weird.

Can almost guarantee you didn't hook up the XM audio RCA leads on the Advent harness. It comes with two harnesses that need to be plugged together - they're both labeled "XM" - one's two male RCA's and one's two female RCA's - plug 'em together and XM audio will result!
