Synthetic Back To Conventional Oil

Recommended Posts

hi all, my question is once we decide to go synthetic, are our hands tied pertaining to going back to conventional oils, such as 10-30 vavolene, (6.0 gas)havolene, castrol, is it an old wives tale....once you go w/synthetics you can't go back to coventionals?

Also would it appy to transmissions, tranfer cases and the lot...been getting about 50/50 responses on this question...any help be greatly appreciated

You can switch between synthetic and conventional oil anytime you wish. They even say you can mix them but I've never tried it (nor would I).

I go back and forth depending upon the availability of the AMSOIL I use. Btw, I have 165K on my motor

No worries at all, back and forth is not a problem.

Just curious but what would cause anyone to go back to convetional after synthetic, knowing its much better for the vehicle?

Price possibly. May be which ever one is a better deal at checkout. Right now, synthetic deals are all over the place. Earlier, dino oil had some pretty good deals

I here condensation in the motor can be an issue with synthetics. I don't know if there is any truth to this.
That is with any engine. It must be brought up to operating temp to burn it off.

way back,... when lube shops started pushing engine flushes for extra $$$, I had some lame lube tech try to tell me I had to flush if I switched from 10W30 conventional to 5W30 conventional oil. He insisted that it had to be done... so I insisted that he clear the other cars out of my way so I could leave his shop.... don't always believe the guy who is going to charge you... some lube shops would have you believe that once you have synthetic (I personally use synthetic in all my vehicles now, as a personal choice) then they want you to believe that you always need to pay the bigger $$$ for synthetic, but not so...

Any motor, any oil. Not specific to any type of oil. Synthetic oils seem to handle it a little better thought.

Not a problem switching back and forth. Most do the synthetic in the colder climate area's for the extra protection on start up and then in the summer months go to conventional due to less expensive oil change cost.

As for mixing, you can if you need to but it isn't recommend. Nothing will happen but over time there can be an issue with additive packages from different brands clashing and causing build up inside the engine or each working against each other and the oils not protecting the engine like they would if they were not mixed.
