:) I've been driving my 99 2500 Sierra to work for a couple weeks to keep the pulse of it and reduce the usage of my 08 1500 (it has 18,000 since Dec). Yesterday, I was getting on the I-405 in the 99 and accelerating thru about 55-60 in the merge lane, when I saw a large milky colored sheet of plastic blow in front of me. :D Before I could change lanes or evade it, the damn thing was stuck across my whole windshield. I couldn't see a thing forward, the freeway was now an overpass with a rail on my right, traffic on my left. :P I felt a shot of adrenaline and I jammed on the brakes while trying to hold a straight line ahead. The only view I had was the left side mirror, so I was holding the wheel without moving and looking backward out that mirror at the merge white line. :D Just as it slowed down to about 25 mph, the plastic let loose and went over the roof. Whew! I didn't crap my pants but I think I put a skid mark on my chonies...

LOL.

I was pulling to I-10 in San Antonio last December.

I sat in the hotel waiting for the ice to melt.

Well, from 6AM to 9AM I had breakfast and read the paper.

Pulled onto I-10 around 9:30AM thinking all the ice would be gone.

To my fascination, as I was entering the on ramp, there was a Chevy pickup going sideways down the freeway. The guys eyes were as big as saucers. He ended up in the concrete abutment wall doing about 5 MPH. Even at that slow speed it caused the truck to do a 180 near an off ramp. Pulled over and he was fine as well as his truck. Minor damage anyway.

Needless to say, I just stayed in the slow lane for about 100 miles on my way to Las Cruces. Very unnerving and I know what you mean about being blind. But that's another discussion.

I know the exact feeling, and have pulled the same thing (watching mirrors to get it shut down safely from 60-70mph).

Except mine wasn't a piece of plastic that some **** didn't take care of...This was my hood flying open and slamming back into the windshield because some dumbass didn't latch it properly.

I agree with you too. Pucker factor of about 9.98! Glad you made it out okay though :)

I recalll an experience similar. It was in my brother's VW on I-5 in the rain, back in the early seventies. We were going about 65 mph in the rain, in about the middle lane of where the I-5 has about half a dozen lanes. I was in the pax side, when the front trunk lid flew open. We were peeking under the lower edge of the lid to look forward. I'll never forget that lid twisting back and forth in the wind. :)

Though not as extreme, this kinda thing has happened to me twice this week:

Just after a rain but the rain has stopped... I'm driving in the center lane of a 6-lane median divided street... vehicles on either side of me so I have little room for any kind of correction/evasion... one of the side vehicles hitting a huuuge puddle collected in the gutter, throwing a sheet of water up on my windshield and obscuring all forward vision.

Not quite the oh sh-- factor as the OP's but still good for a pucker. Of course i just threw on the wipers but those 2-3 seconds without visibility while surrounded by traffic really sucks.

So here we go, not trying to one-up anyone, but I was doing 75 in the high speed lane of an interstate talking on the mobile phone after an ice storm. Sunny day, temps. in the mid 30's. Drove under a bridge, thought I had been shot by the noise and the windshield folded into the cab. Complete spider web and no way to see, heart pounding and my caller saying WTF was that. I looked in the rear view mirrors, crossed the three lanes of traffic, and thanked my lucky stars when I reached the break down lane. The State trooper who responded said 3 other vehicles had been disabled by the ice falling of the freakin chain link bridge guards within the last hour. Yikes!
