20 Mpgs Possible With A 2500 Silverado?

Well I am looking for a new truck and I have decided to look for a 1999-2002 silverado extended cab 2wd. I could probably get by with the 1500 but I would like to get a 2500 or a 2500 HD, mainly because I dont want to get something that I am going to outgrow. I am thinking about trying to start a business and I may need to pull a motorcycle trailer regularly. Does anybody if you can get 20 MPG out of a 2500? At the minimum I would like to get something that will do 18 MPG.

Should I just get a 1500 for right now and then trade it in if and when I need a bigger truck? I just can't see driving a truck regularly that gets 13 MPG unless I need it and have it loaded to full capacity.

thanks

Pre -7.5 before the DPF was capable of 18 and 19 realistically. Some claim to have hit 20s but I owned several LBZs and an LMM and the LBZ always got better mileage. To get the mileage you have to look into the diesels which in the 2500 class of trucks is a win win as if you get the Allison combo you are set for hundreds of thousands of miles.

The 1500s unless you get one with AFM typically offer just slightly better economy. The biggest savings you will experience in which a lot of people overlook is how you state will tax the truck. The 2500HD is actually rated at one tons specs if you look at the specifications when it came online as a baseline.

20mpg doesn't seem like a realistic expectation at all from a 2500 gasser. Hell, I've only gotten 20mpg a handful of times in my 1500 and that was with a tail wind pushing me. And I drive fairly conservative. I'm usually ~19 mpg hwy. I experienced similar mpg with my '07 and '02.

That being said, I'm sure there will be someone posting shortly claiming 30mpg.

I can get 20mpg out of my '07 3500HD (LMM), but that's driving no more than 65mpg with cruise (and no load of course).

Is that Canadian MPG?

For the OP, I would say if you are talking Diesels then yes its possible (not going to happen every trip, but possible to see it) If you are talking 6.0 then the only way you will see 20mpg is if you have it in neutral going down hill.

AFM doesn't do shit for mileage.

OP, if you want 20 MPG, buy a car or a V6 truck. It aint happening in any full sized V8 gas truck, unless you are willing to drive under 60 MPH, with cruise and no load and all freeway. Then you MIGHT see it on occasion with the 5.3L.

No....US. My '07 is a US vechicle. ;)

Yeah, a $7000 option Dmax may nibble up in the high teens driving nice and not fast on flat ground. I haven't done the math on how long it takes to amortize the diesel option over a gas motor, but I'd be surprised if it were very quickly. The guys I know with Dmax trucks get about 12-13 mpg city which is about the same as a gas motor, maybe a mpg better.

Lets just cut to the chase..... The only way to get 20 mpg from a 2500 especially loaded and towing a trailer, is to push it off a cliff.

Things that people usually exaggerate are...how much money they make... how much they got back on their income taxes....and HOW many MPG their vehicle gets. We won't get into sexual fanticies.

Yeah, and I can't figure out why people feel the need to lie about it? After all, I am perfectly content with the 35 MPG I get with my truck and I do not feel the need to lie about it one bit. :smash:

Now that's funny

At the other end of the spectrum, I knew guys in the construction industry that were getting around 9 or 10mpg with 4wd 2500 crew cab 6.0L trucks. They would drive them an hour or two to work and spend the next 8 to 10 hours in the dirt with them.

20 to me sounds unrealistic with a 2500 gasser and barely attainable once in a great long while with a light foot and great driving habits in a 1500

And a SMALL V6 truck at that...even 4cyl. I can't get much more than 16.5mpg out of the 4.3L in my '05 Sierra, that was with 7/8 of the trip on the highway. Granted I was up around 75mph, but I get better than that with my work truck, 4.8L with 3.23s.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
    • Grommets with the right cement should be perfectly fine.
