It mounts under the truck instead of in the engine bay. What will hurt towing is a good sized stall torque converter

We'll see what happens... For a WD hitch do I need a special hitch? Is it better to go WD or air bags?

I've only used one when we towed that travel trailer. A combination of both would be nice

I thought as much, better question though... Won't a WD hitch stop me from taking hills? We keep the boat in an old warehouse and the driveways pretty steep onto the road, then its a steep downhill. Won't the WD hitch stop it from being able to bend at an angle?

The travel trailer is usually towed with the dodge. It has a level and 3" block. The WD comes close to the ground but I don't remember if it hits. We only use it once a year. The drive way is V shape. I would like to say the angle using the gutter as the vertex is roughly 135*. That rear block helped the Dodge. With my truck having the 1.25" GMT-900 block, I scraped. But from hitch to axles. Is roughly 18-20ft. And my truck squatted bad with it.

 

Here is the driveway angle and a pic of trailer length with it hooked to the Dodge 2500. It squats too. But it is a heavy trailer

My opinion do the Firestone Ride Rite's and if it doesn't change it dramatically then go to a WD hitch.

Thats my plan, though I was jw I mean with a WD hitch, in theory, it should keep the whole thing level, which would stress the hitch if its subject to a bed, IE the truck leveling out when the trailer is still pointed uphill...

I am not sure most of my towing doesnt require one. It's mainly a horse trailer and a boat

Oh ok, I think I'm going with the Ride-Rite's then, after I figure out a convenient way of hooking them up to the air horn tank

Here is my 2012 Silverado 1500 ZZ1 appearance package towing our new 13' shadow cruiser 31bhs home yesterday...

 

truck and trailer completly level at 25 psi in the rear firestone air bags, weight distribution bars set correctly.

 

i do have a sway bar question. i added the sway bars, turned 3-4 times to they were semi tight per dealer recomendation....but i still felt like there was more sway and up and down movement than there should have been.

 

any experts on here that can help me out?

I know you mean 31' trailer, right? That's a nice one! I see in your other post it weighs 8000#. Is that dry weight, cause you can count on adding at least 1000# of stuff to go camping, and 9000# is alot for a 1500. What kind of wd hitch do you have?

You can bend those wd hitches quite a bit without hurting them. If you get into a really nasty situation like backing into a steep campsite or something, just disconnect the bars.

Northern Nija, this is a different trailer....the other one was a salem, this is a shadow cruiser. The salem was too heavy for my 1500.

 

this is a 31bhs which is 31 feet of camper, but 35 feet of trailer...its big...my tow mirrors should be in this week which will be nice...this camper is 6700 lbs and fiberglass where as the other one was 8200 lbs and alum.....

 

its pulls great, i have enough power.

How do you have the Firestone's set up? I've been looking for a solenoid or something so I can adjust them from the cab but so far I've had no luck.

I just bougth the manual air bags, ran the lines into a T fitting drilled a hole in the plasitc area fo my bumper (by plate) and mounted shrader valve...i fill to 25psi and then load trailer on . works well for me.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
